Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2016 General taxes by the August 10th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2% late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400, if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Receiver Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property.” In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 516.571.2090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit the Treasurer’s office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that property taxpayers in Oyster Bay do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Program volunteers provide simple maintenance and repair services like cleaning gutters, fixing faucets and installing special-

Pote Behind Every Graduate award by the LeBow College of Business at Drexel University. The annual award recognizes outstanding high school teachers from throughout the country who have inspired Drexel University students to pursue a college education. The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Long Island Spring Happenings

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.
