Waiting Out The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here at home waiting for the floodwaters to recede from the latest torrential downpour to douse Long Island, I am reminded of how we are all truly at the mercy of Mother Nature. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it was that no amount of preparation can adequately hold its own against the wrath of the elements. In this, we are all equal. And yet, there are

those who will try. Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control. If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile. Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it. The same can be said for life as a whole. As

much as we all have this desperate need to control everything, we can’t. Simple as that. Sometimes, we need to accept fate and wait out the figurative “storm” until calmer winds prevail. In these situations, patience is truly a virtue, an enviable trait known only to some. And with that, I see rays of sun peeking through the clouds… Let’s hope I don’t meet too many obstacles on the road ahead.

local FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) team for students ages nine to 14, which competed in the NYC FLL Tournament. When the team lost its coach, Stephanie and another parent stepped up and began coaching the team together the following year. In 2003, Stephanie was approached by SBPLI’s founder, Fred Breithut, to join a new committee which would bring FLL programs to Long Island. She has been a dedicated and active committee member since then, helping to grow the program from 13 teams the first year to over 110 teams in the 10th year. She also helped to start the Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr. FLL) on Long Island for students ages six to nine. Three of the Sterns’ four children - Andrew,

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY

New York State now requires all boaters 18 years and younger to have passed a boating safety class. This new law will continue each year for subsequent ages. Be a safe boater! Protect yourself, family and friends by taking a boating class now. Even if you have been boating for years, the new requirement will be fulfilled by taking this course and passing same. Captree Power Squadron, a unit of United States Power Squadrons (a non-profit nationwide organization) will be conducting boating classes as listed. Upon course completetion students will be issued certificates that are accepted as proof of having the required education. That certificate is accepted by local police, bay constables and US Coast Guard. Most insurance companies also recognize that certificate to entitle you to reduced liability rates. Starting Monday, September 22nd at Town of Babylon Pool Building, 2nd floor, 151 Phelps Lane, North Babylon, at 7:30 p.m. Starting Tuesday, September 23rd at William Rall Elementary School (Library), 761 North Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst, at 7:30 p.m. Both classes take place on 5 successive weeks on same day as start. Babylon Town Councilman Tom Donnelly and State Assemblyman Robert Sweeney recently recognized members of Girl Scout Troop #382 and the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition for their work in beautifying the Vision of Hope Garden, located on the southeast corner of Town Hall Park. As part of the clean-up effort, the scouts joined volunteers to clean up and plant flowers at the Breast Cancer Bow area of the garden. With their hard work, these volunteers helped beautify a part of our community and raised

awareness regarding the work that the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition does for those inflicted with the horrible disease, as well as survivors. Councilman Donnelly and Assemblyman Sweeney thanked the volunteers for their hard work and presented them with honorary certificates. This beautification effort was undertaken as part of Global Youth Service Day, which is a worldwide celebration of community service and civic engagement. These volunteers earned Global Youth Service Day

certificates for their great work. Past projects have included helping non-profit organizations through food drives and monetary donations, collecting food for the needy, visiting local senior citizens centers, making holiday baskets for hospitalized children, conducting community clean-up efforts and assisting local veterans groups in need. Homeless Prevention Grants Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald announced recently the award of $6,745,090 in homeless prevention grants to the New York counties of: Nassau and Suffolk. The grants will serve approximately 1,500 homeless and at-risk Veteran families as part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This award will serve Veteran families associated with Economic Opportunity Counsel of Suffolk Inc., Services for the Underserved Inc., Volunteers of AmericaGreater New York Inc., Black Veterans for Social Justice Inc. five of 301 community agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to receive a grant. “By working with community non-profit organizations, we have enlisted valuable partners in our fight to end homelessness,” McDonald said. “The work of SSVF grantees has already helped thousands of homeless

Veterans and their families find homes and thousands more have been able to stay in their own homes.” As part of the SSVF program, VA awards grants to private nonprofit organizations and consumer cooperatives that provide services to very low-income Veteran families living in - or transitioning to permanent housing. Those community organizations provide a range of services that promote housing stability among eligible very low income Veteran families. Under the terms of the grants, homeless providers will offer Veterans and their family members outreach, case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits and assistance in receiving other public benefits. Communitybased groups can offer temporary financial assistance on behalf of Veterans for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs. VA estimates these grants will serve approximately 115,000 homeless and

at-risk Veteran families nationwide. This is the program’s fourth year. In 2009, President Obama announced the federal government’s goal to end Veteran homelessness by 2015. The grants are intended to help accomplish that goal. According to the 2013 Point-in-Time Estimates of Homelessness, homelessness among Veterans has declined 24 percent since 2009. Through the homeless Veterans initiative, VA committed over $1 billion last year to strengthen programs that prevent and end homelessness among Veterans. Foundation Awards Grants The Sea Tow Foundation has been awarded two grants from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The first grant award of $120,000 funds the continuation of the Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program, which has distributed more than 22,000 life jackets to boaters since its launch in 2008. The second grant award of $100,000 funds a new national Sea Tow Foundation campaign called “Designated Skipper.” The Sea Tow Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization created by

Sea Tow CEO and Founder Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer to promote safe boating practices. “These two grants will help us to continue giving boaters the tools and education they need to stay safe on the water,” said Gail R. Kulp, Executive Director of the Sea Tow Foundation. “We would like to thank the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund and the Coast Guard for recognizing and supporting these important boating safety programs. The Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 220 life jacket loaner stands nationwide where boaters can borrow a life jacket for

a day on the water, free of charge. The purpose of the Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program Grant is to increase the number of loaner stands in the U.S., specifically in areas where there have been high incidents of drowning. Starting in October, the Sea Tow Foundation will be accepting applications from non-profit organizations and state boating agencies across the country to host one or more life jacket loaner stands in their local areas. While many of the existing life jacket loaner stands are maintained by regional Sea Tow franchisees, this will

be the second year that the Sea Tow Foundation has worked with other organizations to ensure that more boaters have access to free loaner life jackets. The new “Designated Skipper” Campaign is part of the Sea Tow Foundation’s ongoing effort to encourage boaters to Designate a Sober Skipper while out on the water. Public awareness and educational materials will be distributed to boaters in an effort to help them understand the dangers of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol and/ or drugs, and why they should Designate a Sober

Skipper whenever they are out boating. The Sea Tow Foundation will be working with numerous non-profit organizations, state boating agencies and for-profit companies in the boating industry to help spread this message. “Boating under the influence and drowning are two of the leading causes of death for recreational boaters,” said Gail R. Kulp, Executive Director of the Sea Tow Foundation. “These deaths could be prevented by borrowing a properly fitting life jacket and Designating a Sober Skipper each time boaters head out on the water.”
