Members are also encouraged to help out on scheduled “work days” with various tasks, such as landscaping and track work.

Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are “scheduled” work days, where members come together and work on whatever needs to be done at that time. However, members can be found working on equipment and projects throughout their free time!

If you would like to attend the next public run day, it will take place on Sunday, August 29th. There is no charge for rides on public run days, however they accept donations of any size.

How To Support Students Interested In The Arts

Schools are diverse communities in which people from all walks of life gather to teach, learn and pursue an assortment of interests and passions. Students are perhaps the best reflection of that diversity, as even small schools are home to young people who excel in sports, music, theatre, and of course, academics. Many young people harbor a strong interest in the arts, which can provide some surprising benefits. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts reports that students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4 percent dropout rate. That’s five times lower than their low socioeconomic status peers. In addition, a report from the Rice Kinder Institute for Urban Research found that arts education experiences reduce the proportion of students in school receiving disciplinary infractions by 3.6 percent. Despite the myriad benefits of participation in arts education, which can include improved

performance in the classroom, Americans for the Arts notes that not all students have access to art-based educational experiences. Parents of students who are interested in the arts can try various approaches to nurture those interests. • Support school-based arts education programs. Funding for arts programs is perpetually in jeopardy. Each state and school district is different, but a 2013 report from the National Association of State Boards of Education found that federal funding for arts and humanities programs totaled roughly $250 million a year, while the National Science Foundation received around $5 billion annually. Arts and sciences are both important, and parents can support legislation that directs more federal funding for the arts while urging local legislators to direct more money to arts education. • Make art a part of life at home. Americans for the Arts recommends that parents make the arts part of life at home.

Participating alongside children as they sing, dance, draw, play music or pursue other artsbased interests is a great way to incorporate the arts into home life while showing kids how fun the arts can be. • Research local performing arts schools. Children who exhibit an especially strong interest in the arts may benefit from enrolling in a school that specializes in performing arts. Such schools may be open to kids as young as five and extend all the way through high school. Some performing arts schools require prospective students to audition or apply. Arts high schools still offer instruction in core academic subjects, but parents should explore each school’s curriculum before deciding if a given school is right for their children. Arts education can have a profound impact on the life of a young person. There are many ways for parents to nurture and encourage their children’s interest in the arts.

Bubble Palooza & Color Fun Run Festival At The Long Island Sports Park, Calverton Bubble Palooza invites the public to participate in Bubble Palooza & Color Fun Run Festival on August 21, 2021 at The Long Island Sports Park in Calverton, New York. Bubble Palooza is 50% run, 50% festival plus 100% family-fun! This reinvented 5K is mapped for 1K, allowing the participant to choose the length of their run up to 5K. Runners hop, run, walk, or stroll through bubbles while throwing color powder at friends and family, take pictures along the route with our professional photographers, play in a circle of bubbles in the bubble bash center of the event, enjoy festival vendors and entertainment; such as, face painting, balloon twisting, TouchA-Truck with Riverhead Fire Department, henna,

Registration to participate in the run is required and now open. Individuals can register online. The fee to participate is $29 through August 19, 2021 and increases to $39 after and up through the day of the event. Children four and under can participate for free with a registered adult and have an option to purchase a swag bag. Festival attendees and/or spectators are free. Bubble Palooza & Color Fun Run Festival supports a local nonprofit, The Butterfly Effect Project (BEP) by hosting

a drive to collect nonperishable food items and/ or toy donations for their annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket Drive. BEP is a communityoriented organization that empowers young girls by giving them the tools to achieve emotionally stable and self confident futures, in hopes of bringing forth a generation of women who are strong, independent and knowledgeable. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends. • A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five years. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than

5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

The Center for Science Teaching & Learning’s (CSTL) expanded Dinosaurs! and Animal Adventure exhibit, featuring four new animatronic dinosaurs, is open and welcoming families and groups. New to the exhibit are five animatronic dinosaurs that are located both inside and outside the exhibition hall. A recent report from Campus Safety and Security, there were 38,100 reported criminal offenses, including burglary and identity theft, on college campuses in the United States in 2017.

PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact

with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture

Ten Tips from Stony Brook Medicine to Stay Heart-Safe This Summer Now that temperatures are on the rise and humidity is surging, it is important to protect our hearts from the hazards of the summer sun. On Chen, MD, interventional cardiologist and Director of the CCU and Telemetry Units, Outpatient Cardiology Services and the Lipid Program at Stony Brook Medicine, has some suggestions to help you stay heart-safe all summer long. People with an existing heart condition need to be careful with warmer temperatures, but even a healthy heart can be put under stress when temperatures climb. Following are tips for helping to make your summer heartsafe: Hydrate. Adequate hydration is nothing less than your best friend as the summer heat moves in. Drinking plenty of water helps regulate your temperature, helps your heart pump more easily and keeps all your organs functioning properly. Remember to drink before you are thirsty, and avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages, which can dehydrate the body. And, it is important to know that some common heart medications can make you more vulnerable to high heat and increase your hydration needs. Talk to your doctor about your specific hydration needs. Staying Cool. If you don’t have access to air conditioning, cold compresses (an ice-pack or ice-water filled bottle) applied to your ‘pulse points’ — the areas where your veins are closest to your skin’s surface, including wrists, neck, temples and armpits — can help you cool down. Eat Water-Rich Foods. You get about 20 percent of your water from the foods you eat. A hot weather diet that emphasizes cold soups, salads and fruits can both satisfy hunger and provide extra fluid. Strawberries,

watermelon, peaches, cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, peppers and spinach, are all fruits and veggies that are 90 percent or more water. Know Heat Illness Warning Signs. Spending too much time in extreme heat may lead to heat exhaustion and, in turn, heatstroke, two serious heatrelated illnesses in which your body can’t control its temperature. Heat Exhaustion Symptoms: Heavy sweating, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps, tiredness, dizziness and fainting. Treatment: Move to a cool place, loosen clothing, use cold compresses, sip cool (not cold) water. If symptoms persist, call 911. Heatstroke (also called Sunstroke) Symptoms: Fever of 104 degrees or more; severe headache; behavioral changes; confusion; hot, red skin; no sweating; rapid heartbeat and loss of consciousness. Treatment: Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency. Call 911 immediately. Quickly move the individual to a cooler place, use cold compresses, do not give anything to drink. Know Your Numbers. See your doctor to get a careful look at your “numbers,” including your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, your blood pressure and more. Knowing your numbers and your risk factors are an important part of heart health, especially before engaging in warm-weather activities. Timing is Everything. Avoid being outdoors during the hottest times of the day, when the sun is at its strongest and temps are at their highest. Your cardiovascular system has to work harder on a hot day in an effort to keep your body cool. In fact, for every degree that your body temperature rises, your heart has to pump an additional ten beats per minute. Everyone is at risk in extreme heat, but high

Think loose, light-colored clothing (to help reflect heat) that is made of a lightweight, breathable fabric like cotton. Make your warm weather workouts shorter and slower, aim for morning or evening when the temps and humidity are lower, choose shady pathways and trails or an air-conditioned space. Work with your healthcare team to develop a plan that is best for you. Listen to your body. If you aren’t used to regular exercise, are over 50, have heart disease or have questions about your heart health, see your doctor before participating in any strenuous outdoor summer activities. Saladino Urges Storm Preparedness Residents are reminded to update or develop their Family Emergency Plan, Emergency Go-Kits and Family & Friends Sheltering Plan, as storms can quickly evolve into dangerous situations requiring quick action and sometimes evacuation. An updated and accurate Family Emergency Plan is a key component to planning for Hurricane Season. The unique needs of family members, such as the elderly, infants, those with access and functional needs and any pets should be considered. Residents should inquire about what plans are in place at work and schools in case of emergency. After all of the information is collected, gather your family to discuss how the plan works. Practice

your plan at least twice a year and update it according to any issues that arise. Residents should assembly an Emergency Go-Kit, keep it by their front door in a duffel bag and include enough supplies for everyone in the household for five days, including: First aid kit. Pack a “how to” guide and masks as well. Essential prescription and nonprescription items and medical information. Battery-powered flashlight and radio (or crank radio), extra batteries and a 12-hour glow stick. A change of clothes, plus rainwear, sturdy shoes and protective gloves for everyone. Personal items, eyeglasses and personal care items. Important documents

in a waterproof container: drivers’ licenses, wills, birth/ marriage certificates, insurance policies, deed or lease papers, recent tax returns, credit card and bank account numbers, Social Security cards, Passport and home inventory list. Make sure you have special items for infants, elderly persons, pets or loved ones with special needs. Residents can also safeguard their pets by preparing a Pet Go-Kit, which should include: Your pets’ names, address and phone number. Your name, address, phone and cell number. Emergency contact friend or family. Your veterinarian’s name and contact info. Important documents. Medical records. Medications with

specific care instructions and behavioral problems. First Aid kit. Current photos. Sturdy leash, collar or harness, muzzles. Paper towels for cleanup. Food and bottled water (three-day supply). Manual can opener and bowls. Water purification tablets. Toys and other comfort items. Treats, brushes and combs. Newspapers and plastic bags. Residents should develop a Family & Friends Sheltering Plan in the event they are asked to evacuate their home. If you are advised to evacuate, here’s what to do: A Family & Friends Sheltering Plan is recommended for

anyone who resides in south of Sunrise Highway or in low lying areas north of Route 25A. You should contact a friend or family member that lives outside the zone & make arrangements as this provides the most comfortable way to weather a severe storm. Bring your Emergency Go-Kit. Turn off all utilities. Take your most reliable vehicle and avoid taking multiple vehicles that create gridlock. Supervisor Saladino added, “Town of Oyster Bay residents know all too well the threats posed by Hurricane Season. Be prepared, not scared, start thinking about your plan today.” Homeowners should plan for the possibility of power outages as heavy rains and wind results in downed branches

and trees which can knock out power lines. To report downed trees or stranded cars during the storm, please call Public Safety at (516) 677-5350. With the loss of power comes the use of generators. Residents are reminded that generators should never be run inside the home or garage due to the dangers of carbon monoxide. Generators used in enclosed spaces can lead to death. To report a power outage or electrical emergency, residents may contact PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0075. Residents can stay alert for weather forecasts and messages from the Town. Residents may also signup for Emergency Notifications at www. oysterbaytown.com.
