Coney Island USA and Professa Adam Rinn Present: Sideshow School. Coney Island USA’s Sideshow School is the only school of its kind where students can learn the ancient and sometimes deadly secrets of the sideshow. A new crop of thrill seekers will be attending the next session, scheduled for August 22nd-24th at Sideshows by the Seashore. Now in its 17th year,

Sideshow School has taught dozens of potential circus, sideshow and carnival workers how to walk on glass, eat and breathe fire, swallow swords, and hammer nails into their faces, along with a handful of other of the sideshow’s ‘working acts.’ Students take the class at their own risk and must sign a hold harmless agreement absolving the school and its instructors from any possible injuries

the students might incur. “In all the years that I’ve taught sideshow school,” Dean and Professa, Adam Rinn declares, “nobody has ever gotten hurt.” Rinn himself was a graduate of the Sideshow School and went on to become a prolific performer who has entertained audiences throughout North America. Sessions are capped at 10 students so that each student can learn

in a safe and controlled atmosphere. “Safety is key when learning these feats,” says Rinn,“we don’t force anything upon the students, they attend the school because they want to learn these unique acts. It’s important to be patient and work with the students at their level.” Those attending the three day, hands on seminar have ranged from doctors, authors and teachers who have a general interest in

sideshow and circus arts to magicians, jugglers and bartenders who have used some of the skills they have learned in their own line of work to sideshow performers looking to expand their repertoire. But it is not all about the ‘working acts.’ The three day session also offers a history of the legendary amusement district and its role in olde time and contemporary freak shows. “It’s very rewarding

when the students conquer their fears and hit the ground running,” The Professa states. “After each session, I get a slew of emails thanking me and telling me what a life changing experience sideshow school was. Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

Back to School Drive Announced Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Scott Martella Back-to-School Drive in partnership with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless to provide supplies for underprivileged students before the start of the school year. The donation drive will be held in memory of Scott Martella, the former Communications Director for County Executive Bellone who was tragically killed last year in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. “Scott was a one of a kind public servant who deeply cared about giving back to those less fortunate in the community,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “As a former

Smithtown School Board member, Scott had a passion for giving students the tools they needed to be successful. This event will help thousands of Long Island children while honoring Scott’s legacy and commitment he had to serving others.” Scott, who was 29 at the time of his passing, was widely considered a rising star in New York State government and public service. This effort of donating much needed supplies is not only critical for so many children throughout Suffolk County but also continues Scott’s legacy.” The goal for this years drive is to prepare 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for children who are homeless or at-risk on Long Island. Last year’s event was a huge success having collected and assembled nearly 3,500 backpacks making a difference for Long Island’s homeless youth population. Scott had previously worked with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless on a myriad of projects and events including school supply drives, coat drives, holiday events and the annual point in time homeless count. New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Louis B. Imbroto and new Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand recently recognized soon-to-be 9th grader, Sophia Greco of the Girl Scouts Association in Plainedge, for her leadership and dedication to the community. Sophia started an

initiative called “A Day at the Beach” in which she organized a workshop at TOBAY Beach that covered first aid, water safety and lifeguarding. Sophia cleaned, painted, organized and stocked the first aid room and she assisted in stocking all the first aid bags for lifeguard stands and EMS. Sophia numbered

each lifeguard stand so that visitors could easily identify their whereabouts and she financed this entire volunteer project through cookie sales and babysitting. Supervisor Saladino thanked Sophia and congratulated her on her achievement, while she attained the Girl Scout Silver Award.

Initially John provided swim lessons at Florence Avenue Beach in the morning and then travelled to Tobay Beach to work as a lifeguard on the bayside in the afternoon. By 1975, John was a Senior Lieutenant at the ocean, joined by his wife Donna, who was a staff lifeguard. Through many years of hard work, and dedication to the beach, John became Assistant Captain in 1990 and was later joined by his son Kim, and his daughter Stacey, who were also ocean guards. As of the summer of 2013, McGovern became the Captain of the TOBAY Lifeguards. With his leadership, the TOBAY lifeguard corps is second to
