TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Sacks for Soldiers

Rising juniors at Chaminade High School Matthew and Thomas Stueber have always been thinking about what their plans are after high school. When they were eight, the boys had the opportunity to attend a football game and tour the campus at West Point. This visit led Matt to setting the dream of attending a military academy and serving his country. Through the years Matthew and Thomas have always sent items the soldiers were in need of to different

charity organizations. After speaking with an Army Ranger after a recent deployment Matt realized what the soldiers really miss are those comfort items that we all take for granted, from there the idea of Sacks for Soldiers took hold. The goal is to send comfort items, mixed in with necessities, directly to the soldiers who are deployed. The Sacks for Soldiers website is: https:// sites.google.com/view/ sacks-for-soldiers/home. Support has come from the Chamiade Football Family

and thanks to support from the Massapequa Kiwanis Club all shipping costs up to $2,000 are covered so in addition to all items donated, all money contributed goes directly to purchasing items sent to the soldiers. So far Sacks for Soldiers has sent 3 packages, the goal is to make this a sustainable project and send at least one package a month. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier today announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Thursday, September 3, 2020 to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. Now, during this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our

local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood

banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.” The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who

received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink ﬂuids in the days before the Blood Drive. “Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6304. Hopping on the popular pop-up drive-in movie trend, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that the County is rolling out a drive-in movie night series with FREE showings of family favorites under the stars on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout August. Food trucks will be onsite, and movie goers can get their fix of summertime snacks and movie theater staples. “Nostalgic drive-ins, more than half a century after their heyday, are having a revival across the country and Nassau County is happy to embrace the trend with this series of free movie nights under the stars,” said County Executive Laura Curran. Showings will take place at Eisenhower Park’s new drive-in theater located at parking lot 6A - with space

for up to 120 cars. Entry to the parking lot will begin at 7:00pm with the night’s movie showing beginning at dusk (approximately 8:30pm). The Nassau County IDA has placed Farmingdale Village in a small list of Villages to visit this summer by Discover Long Island. An app is being developed featuring Day Trips to several Long Island spots. This is a great idea; especially since many are doing staycations and vacationing close to home lately. Stay tuned and thanks to Discover Long Island, the IDA and especially Richard Kessel. We are proud to say that the Flag Retirement Box proudly created and delivered from one Eagle Scout to another (ME!); is now full. For his Eagle Scout project, Eagle Scout candidate, Cody Sapeta had made four collection boxes for American flags to be retired. The Scouts collect the flags and perform a flag burning ceremony under the United States flag code. In March; Cody delivered the four collection boxes, one to Farmingdale Village Hall, and three other locations: Oyster Bay Town Hall, VFW hall and another to the Farmingdale Public Library. Truly a splendid Eagle Scout project – on behalf of the Farmingdale Village Board of Trustees and myself –thanks again and congratulations Cody!! Reminder – the Farmers Market is “On The Village Green” on Sundays, from 10 AM – 3PM, shop and dine local while in town. National Grid is finishing up work in the Village and then re-paving will move ahead - on Main Street and on State Route 109 / Fulton Street. This auditorium will provide a larger public space for social distancing. We await guidance from the New York State Board of Elections for all Election related matters.
