Food-Insecure Seniors Are The Focus Of Fair Sponsored By Long Island Cares And PSEG Long Island Long Island ‘s foodinsecure seniors are the focus of the Senior Resource Fair taking place Friday, August 12 at Long Island Cares’ Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. The fair is co-sponsored by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank and PSEG Long Island. The purpose of the fair is three-fold: provide increased access to nutritious food, offer takehome fresh produce at a special “farmer’s market,” and expose seniors to advocacy efforts on their behalf and the numerous resources available to them. American Heart Association And Mount Sinai South Nassau Work With Local Libraries To Lend Blood Pressure Monitoring Kits Libraries serve as gateways to knowledge and culture. They play a fundamental role in many communities as places to gather, learn, and borrow books. Thanks to a collaboration between the American Heart Association, Mount Sinai South Nassau and local libraries in Nassau County the library is now a place to manage your blood pressure. An estimated 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, according to new statistics from the American Heart Association. That’s nearly half of all adults in the United States. “High blood pressure or hypertension is often called the “silent killer” and is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke, which together kills more New Yorkers than any other disease,” said Lawrence Kanner, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai South Nassau. “Nationwide, nearly half of US adults has

hypertension with Black and Latino adults being more likely to have high blood pressure. The American Heart Association with help from Mount Sinai South Nassau has implemented the self-monitoring blood pressure initiative, collaborating with clinics and community centers as well as libraries. The goal of the blood pressure monitor loan program is to reduce HBP across Long Island by educating individuals about HBP and providing them a blood pressure monitor for them to track their blood pressure at home. The American Heart Association and Dr. Kanner recommend regular monitoring for all people with high blood pressure to help the healthcare provider determine whether treatments are working. “Bringing resources to the communities that need

Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.” According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt

Special recognition was given to the recipients of the Veteran’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Veteran Volunteer of the Year Award. “All four of this year’s

honorees have involved themselves in numerous veteran activities and events and perform many diverse services on behalf of America’s fighting men and women,” said Supervisor Saladino. “They are hometown heroes and role models, and are truly worthy of tonight’s honor. I look forward to their continued service in the years ahead.” Recipients of the Town’s Veterans Lifetime

Padric Nugent, of Massapequa, is a United States Army Veterans and now retired 20-year Army Reserve Sergeant who spent 25 years as an NYPD Detective. He also performs “Buddy Checks” to make sure his fellow veterans are doing well. This organization thrives because of its volunteers, who do the heavy lifting of taking care of the emotional and tangible needs of families who depend on their hospitality while their child receives life-saving medical treatment. Ruth Signorelli of Sayville, NY has volunteered with RMHC at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for the last two-plus years, pushing the colorful “Hospitality à la Carte” cart, delivering much-needed toiletries, snacks, games, books and toys to parents and children in their hospital room. Always arriving at “just the right time”, the volunteers and treats on the cart give an added boost of joy to the day!

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Northwell Direct, NYPD Announce Finest Care: Free, Conﬁdential Counseling For Police Ofﬁcers Northwell Direct and The New York Police Department recently announced a new collaboration that will connect the 36,000 uniformed Members of Service with free, confidential counseling and other mental health services. Finest Care enables officers to call a confidential Northwell Health behavioral health access and navigation center to be assessed and linked to Northwell’s expansive network of psychologists and psychiatrists through the Northwell Direct provider network*. Northwell Direct is owned by Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider and private employer. “Northwell Direct is honored to be able to provide New York’s Finest with the highest-quality mental health services available,” said Nick Stefanizzi, CEO of Northwell Direct. “By providing a confidential and easy-to-use navigation service, we’re breaking down barriers and changing how behavioral health is accessed. With Finest Care, the dedicated public servants of the NYPD will be immediately connected to the help they need by making a simple phone call.” The 24/7/365-day-a-week call center will be available for all uniformed Members of Service and all calls will be received and triaged by trained nurses and master-level therapists. If a Member of Service is experiencing an acute crisis, the nurse or therapist will be able to arrange for an appropriate and immediate medical response, including the dispatch of an ambulance or access to emergency telepsychiatry services. “We are excited to be able to increase police officer access to Northwell’s stellar behavioral therapy teams, and wide choice of venues, helping us provide Finest Care, everywhere,” said Eli Kleinman, MD, MPH, NYPD chief surgeon. “Finest Care through Northwell Direct is an excellent resource for NYPD, said Lokesh

Reddy, MD, NYPD deputy chief surgeon. “Our police officers will have more access to exceptional mental health services.” “To best serve our women and men police officers, the NYPD is dedicated to ensuring the continuity of all aspects of our proactive and comprehensive wellness program,” said Dr. Adria Adams, the director of the NYPD’s Health and Wellness Section. “And our collaboration with Northwell Direct is integral to that important work. It ensures there is no interruption in accessing immediate mental health care, outside of the department, on an ongoing basis, in a comprehensive manner, and with a health partner that offers a large footprint of service facilities throughout our region. We know this continuation of the Finest Care program will meet our officers’ needs with the thoughtfulness and confidentiality they require.” Appointments with a psychologist or psychiatrist for comprehensive evaluation and counseling will be available within 48 hours of the call for urgent issues. In-person or virtual visits will be offered to accommodate personal preference and schedule. “Mental health disorders are among the most common illnesses in our communities, and they can have a severe impact on functioning and quality of life,” said Manish Sapra, MD, executive director of the behavioral health service line at Northwell Health. “Police officers face unique stressors not seen in the general public.
