TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you are interested in donating to their organization, you can safely and securly donate on their website when you click the ‘donate’ tab. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

“Telemedicine,” Telehealth Enables Patients To Speak With Their Physicians Social distancing guidelines encouraging people to stay in their homes as much as possible led many to wonder what to do in regard to visiting their physicians. Telehealth is one option people may want to explore. Sometimes referred to as “telemedicine,” telehealth enables patients to speak with their physicians via phone, tablet or conferencing apps such as Zoom. This can help patients and their physicians reduce their risk for exposure to viruses such as COVID-19, but also other conditions that can weaken their immune systems and, as a result, make them more vulnerable to illness. As helpful as telehealth can be while social distancing restrictions remain in place,

it’s important that patients continue to seek the advice of their own physicians. One of the concerns about telehealth noted by representatives for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the difﬁculty of monitoring health care providers who may not have patients’ best interests in mind. This can lead to certain problems, including overprescribing medications and doctors offering medical advice to patients in states where the physicians are not licensed to practice. Speaking only with physicians who have already treated you is one way to avoid this potential pitfall associated with telehealth services.

John O’Meara of the Farmingdale UFSD, who attends Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, earned the prestigious George Farber Outstanding Student Award this year. The award celebrates a variety of John’s remarkable attributes including passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship and a willingness to help others. John was honored during a virtual ceremony held this June, featuring a special presentation of his award plaque by the Barry Tech principal and his award nominator. He was further honored with an individual lawn sign announcing his achievement, a car parade past his home, and a $100 check for his outstanding

contributions. John is an exceptional student who has always held a place on the High Honor Roll and remains at the top of his class. In 2019, he was appointed National Ofﬁcer to SkillsUSA, a nationally acclaimed organization dedicated to preparing students for the workforce. John, who represents New York State as the Area VI Vice President, was elected to his post during the National SkillsUSA Competition. John has a heart of gold and is always ready to help others. He contributes to a variety of Nassau BOCES events and volunteers his time to several community organizations. “John exempliﬁes the very best of Nassau BOCES,” said District

Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon. “He embodies the true spirit of George Farber. He has shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic and demonstrated outstanding commitment. He has eagerly shared his knowledge and made contributions to his community. John’s story is an inspiration to us all.” For the past thirteen years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

A Special Thanks to the Nassau County Police Keeping the Village Safe: As many of you may have heard there was recently an incident where police were called and responded to possible suicide threat outside a residence on Staples Street. Newsday reported that the house had 22 unregistered guns and bomb making materials – enough to make six bombs. Three people were arrested as a result of the NCPD investigation. I was in contact with Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and thanked him, and the County police department on behalf of the residents of the Village of Farmingdale for keeping the residents of Farmingdale safe. The alertness of the investigators who discovered the weapons and bomb making materials, when called to the home, prevented what may have been a very bad outcome. There were no injuries to anyone. As Nassau County Executive Laura Curran stated, “Thanks to our First Responders,

who knows how many lives will be saved because of this really important work.” Again; I applaud Commissioner Patrick Rider and the members of the the Nassau County Police Department! Summer is officially here!! As the weather warms up, Nassau County’s cooling centers are open for anyone who needs to cool down in the air-conditioning on days of extreme temperatures. The cooling centers will be following the state’s guidelines to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Anyone who arrives without a mask will be provided one. Try to ENJOY this warmer weather, outdoor activities, beautiful ﬂowers, parks, sports, beaches, barbecues …. here’s some summer tips: *Make sure the kids are getting exercise. Encourage children to STAY ACTIVE; walk, run, swim, play sports, jump rope, ride bikes, etc.f * Eat healthy. How to motivate visitors American Armor? The Armor The Museum of American to maintain social distancing Museum has enlisted the Armor, 1303 Round Swamp upon entering the Museum of Army. Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters ﬁrst created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. Dr. Villard explained, “I already have a massive collection of these posters. I just looked through them and thought, ‘Okay, which ones could be modiﬁed, so that they keep something of the original spirit, but would be applicable to the Covid crisis?’ “Some of the posters are

kind of the traditional attack / over the top variety; but then others, like the ‘Knowledge Wins’ poster are more information-based. Certain images will resonate with some people, and others will prefer a different approach,” he continued. Museum of American Armor founder and president, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “We are following all the CDC protocols which allowed the museum to open on July 31st, but we wanted to make sure that our visitors’ behavior remained the ﬁrst line of defense against spreading COVID-19. These imaginative re-envisionings of classic military posters by Dr. Villard are designed to get your attention, focus on COVID precautions, and to do so in a setting that reminds you America has gotten through much worse when it pulled together.” The Museum of American Armor has some 40 operational military vehicles
