Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each
year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out
policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important
for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “These Federal funds were granted to the Town of Oyster Bay to help residents recover from economic hardships created by the pandemic and government shutdowns. This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.” The program is designed to assist Town residents with current
and prospective rent, arrears for utilities and home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing such as rental security deposits. Both tenants and landlords may apply and both will be requested to participate. Assistance under this program could be provided for up to 12 months of payments, with an additional 3 months if necessary to ensure housing stability, and will cover arrears and costs accrued on or after March 13, 2020. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted. To
be eligible, a household must meet the following qualifications: • Be renting in the Town of Oyster Bay as a primary residence (including all Villages but excluding the City of Glen Cove); • Show that one or more individuals within the household has either qualified for unemployment benefits,
experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or experienced other financial hardship during or due to the COVID-19 pandemic; • Demonstrate that the household is at risk of homelessness or housing instability; and • Have household income at or below 80%

Town Plants Thousands Of Oysters Originally Headed For Dinner Plates In Oyster Bay Harbor Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato took to the waters on the Town’s north shore to continue efforts of replenishing the oyster supply in Oyster Bay Harbor. The Town received these mollusks as part of a national effort facilitated by the Pew Charitable Trusts and The Nature Conservancy, which purchases surplus product from local farmers to be transplanted into conservation management areas for environmental restoration efforts and
not to be harvested. The planting of these bivalves represents only a portion of the total plantings expected to take place in the harbor through the SOAR (Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration) program this summer, culminating in a total of roughly 100,000 mature oysters. “Oyster Bay Harbor is one of the crown jewels of our Town, and this great initiative helps to naturally clean our waters, absorb wave action for shoreline stabilization, and filter local waterways while spawning additional shellfish,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These oysters are fully grown and perfect
for planting, so rather than discard them, we partner with these wonderful organizations through the SOAR program to continue our efforts in replenishing the supply in our waters.” Councilwoman Johnson added, “Protecting our natural assets is critically important for the Town, and by restoring our shellfish populations, we ensure that we are helping to keep our waters clean. The SOAR project helps tremendously in advancing those efforts and we thank the Pew Charitable Trusts and Nature Conservancy for all of their efforts in bringing this program to fruition in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Residents Invited to Bring Chairs, Coolers to Free ‘Music Under the Stars’ Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that residents are reminded to bring chairs and coolers to the Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach. In accordance with new CDC guidelines, the concerts will no longer be held in a drivein fashion and residents can set up
seating areas in the lot at TOBAY. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series, held at local parks on Wednesdays this summer, will also be hosted in a traditional manner, inviting residents and families to bring chairs, blankets and coolers to enjoy the show. The 2021 summer concert and
movie series will feature a wide variety of genres ranging from country to rock, providing free family fun for all music lovers, as well as family-friendly movie selections. Admission is open to Town residents beginning at 7 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis, and residency will be verified upon admission. Most
