Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand joined with Girl Scouts of Nassau County CEO Rande Bynum to honor Girl Scouts who have achieved their Gold Award. “We are so proud to honor such distinguished young women. The Gold Award acknowledges the power behind each Girl Scout’s dedication to not only bettering herself but committing to make the world a better place for others,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These girls identified needs in their communities and took dedicated action to address them. We are so proud to honor Girl Scouts who have achieved the most prestigious award in scouting.” 2022 Girl Scout Gold Award Honorees Include: SARA HUGHES of Farmingdale To earn her Gold Award, Sara started a Zumba fit club at her high school. She developed this club in order to address the lack of fitness clubs offered in her school, and to find a solution to social isolation experienced by many students during lockdown. While promoting exercise in a fun and engaging way, Sara educated students about the physical, mental and social benefits of Zumba while also leading workshops for schools, teachers and Girl Scout troops. The Zumba Fit Club will be carried on through Sara’s school as it was approved by the school’s administration. DANIELLE GALARDI of Seaford Post COVID-19, mental health concerns amongst teens and young adults are on the rise. Through Danielle’s project, “You Are Not Alone in this World,” Danielle took on the challenge of bringing Mental Health Awareness initiatives to these students. To prevent stigma around mental health, she created

a presentation to educate her community on the importance of mental health and emotional wellbeing while also developing a resource guide that was shared with her school’s psychologist to assist students. Danielle’s high school psychology teacher implemented her message into his curriculum. AVA FIORELLO of Massapequa Ava’s project, “Chess and Unwind” provides a safe environment for people of all ages to play a healthy and relaxing game of chess outside while also providing an education on the benefits of chess. Ava’s project aimed for people to get outdoors and to challenge themselves to think differently. Her project consisted of a permanent life-size chess set that will continue to be accessible to residents. Additionally, the senior day care center has added chess to their programming to help engage individuals to improve their mental skills. JOAN OLIVERO of Oyster Bay Joan addressed the issue of e-waste to earn her Gold Award. She partnered with the Town of Oyster Bay, Best Buy and the ERI National Recycler to assist in her project. Joan developed a campaign that educated consumers about the benefits of repurposing the valuable metal of electrical cords. She hosted a grassroots information and collection center at the local farmers’ market and the Town of Oyster Bay’s Town Hall to connect members of her community with existing programs. She continues to educate people of the negative effects for irresponsibly disposing of e-waste. EDEN PRICE of Massapequa Eden educated youth ice hockey players on safety and injury prevention to earn her Gold Award. She researched and presented

information to young players along with their parents on common injuries sustained in hockey, how to prevent these injuries and when to seek medical attention. Eden also designed a pamphlet, and created a website to raise awareness on player safety. Northwell Health and Eden’s local hockey rink will continue to use her pamphlet at the Town of Oyster Bay’s hockey player safety meetings and it will be permanently posted on the bulletin board when you enter the rink. KATE BLUNDIN of Locust Valley Kate took on the challenge of addressing food insecurity by teaching younger children about giving back to the community. Due to the pandemic and rise in food insecurity, many food services such as food pantries and soup kitchens struggled to keep up with the demand. Kate partnered with NOSH, a program of the North Shore Soup Kitchen, designed to deliver groceries to those in need. Through her discussion, presentations, and video, she worked with children to educate them on food insecurity while also making notes and bracelets on the grocery bags. AYESHA CHANDNANI of Syosset To earn her Gold Award, Ayesha Chandnani interviewed senior citizens to document their life story and give advice for younger people. Ranging from starting a business, to pursuing a career in engineering, to serving in the army, Ayesha highlighted how her interviewees persevered and used problem-solving skills to achieve their goals. She presented these interviews at local libraries, and they can be viewed through her website along with a guide to help students reach out to elders in their communities. EMMA SCHNEIDER of N. To earn her Gold Award, Emma Schneider tackled the issue of gender inequities in the STEM field. The goal of her project was to address a lack of exposure and gender biases in the field of STEM. She aims to create a growing interest in girls to major in STEM. Emma produced a documentary series titled “The STEM Station,” that educates girls on what STEM is and types of careers that are available. Her channel includes a guide of what courses girls should take and clubs to join in high school to be prepared for a college STEM major. “The STEM Station” is the centerpiece of Emma’s Girl Scout Gold Award and the Emma’s resources will be sustained on YouTube to help more students pursue a career in STEM. GIULIANA FEIJOO of Old Bethpage Giuliana Feijoo successfully educated young students on the dangers of e-cigarettes to earn her Gold Award. Within her project, her goal was to address the lack of information on smoking and vaping found on social media. She hosted in-person and virtual presentations on the dangers of short and long-

term effects of smoking in any form. Giuliana also led discussions after her presentation to help answer additional questions from students. Her resources can be accessed on YouTube and related social media to continue to raise awareness on the negative effects of e-cigarettes. JULIANNA MCCARTHY of Massapequa To earn her Gold Award, Julianna McCarthy successfully set up a sensory path hallway in Schwarting Elementary School. Teaming up with an Applied Behavioral Analysis therapist, Julianna researched how different activities can help sooth a child or increase their stimulation to awaken their sensory systems. In doing so, she created a mood regulator path benefitting children with sensory issues while also remaining open to all students and teachers. She included a description and purpose of each activity along the path and created a packet for the main office to distribute to other school staff. Julianna’s sensory path is sustained by the school psychologist and continues to be utilized by the teachers and staff in the building.

MICHAELA JOHNSON of Farmingdale To earn her Gold Award, Michaela Johnson addressed the issue of the expense and access of diabetic supplies. She spoke at many seminars and national organization events as well as with local community members. Through her discussions and website, she shared available resources to help people to acquire diabetic supplies they might not be able afford. She worked closely Tami Balavage, the founder of Help a Diabetic Child Foundation and her project will continue to make an impact as her website will be available to all those who need. “On behalf of the Town Board, we commend these fine young women for earning the highest and most coveted achievement through the Girl Scouts of America,” said Councilman Hand. “What makes attaining a Gold Award even more admirable is that less than 6% of Girl Scouts achieve this accomplishment annually. These honorees express a special commitment to themselves, their communities, and their futures.”

He became close friends with the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, and got to learn from and eventually perform with him. In September of 2015 Buddy was honored to receive the “Long Island Sound Award” from the LI Music Hall of Fame “For Outstanding Contributions to Long Island’s Musical Heritage.” He has brought Back Roads down to

the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to perform a few times, and they’ve also performed at the grand opening of the Bluegrass Museum and Hall of Fame in Owensboro, KY and Country Music’s Fan Fair in Nashville, TN. The group has played at most of the Bluegrass Festivals in the northeastern U.S., including Grey Fox and Podunk, and at several Long Island venues, such as Hecksher Park in Huntington, Bald Hill Cultural Center, Agawam Park in Southampton, and has headlined concerts for LITMA (the Long Island Traditional Music Association), the Huntington Folk Music Society and the Museums at Stony Brook Folk & Fiddle Festival. Buddy Merriam’s involvement in the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival dates back to its beginnings. He has graced the stage at Tanner Park many times throughout the festival’s 20 years, and is a crowd favorite whenever he plays. PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact

with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture

it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line. Program Supporting MWBEs With Training And Resources Sets Example For The State

In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow. The program, which is aimed at supporting and elevating Minority, Women and Veteran Business Enterprise entrepreneurs within the Town of Babylon, has helped dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs connect to financial, technical and legal assistance, with many starting new businesses or getting MWBE certified in the process. “The purpose of this effort was to focus on entrepreneurs within the Town that were primed for success but didn’t have all the tools or resources to do so,” said Tom Dolan, CEO of the Babylon IDA. “Helping to fill these common gaps, which are hurdles to success, was our main objective and with the results we have seen from this program’s infancy tell us we are onto something revolutionary. It is our hope that with some additional funding, we can

expand this program locally while regions throughout the state can launch similar programs so we can really make some progress on this front statewide.” Since its launch in the fall of 2020, the initiative has guided the development of nearly 30 aspiring or existing business owners who were looking for direction amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. From a financial perspective, the program has helped business owners secure nointerest loans while also improving access to capital by creating supporting crowdfunding and micro-lending. Technical assistance has also been provided to address sales and profit deficiencies, closure rates and other barriers to business growth while overseeing partnerships with foundations and universities to provide capacity building. Ronald McDonald House Charities® New York Metro www. rmhcnym.org Families can travel hours for lifesaving treatments. Families without accommodation near a hospital can endure long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings left at home and for some, no place to sleep. They’re far from family and friends who give them support. However, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) New York Metro, a 501c3 non-proﬁt organization, keeps families seeking medical treatment for their sick children near the care they need and the families they love. The mission of RMHC New York Metro is to build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families. “Since its inception in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House has served an average of 1,000 families per year,” said Matt Campo, CEO, RMHC NY Metro. “We’ve given back 27,000 hours to the families to spend with their child that might have otherwise been wasted driving back and forth to hotels, to eat meals, or to do laundry. Everything a family needs for long term accommodation can be found in our house.” RMHC New York Metro runs a variety of programs, dating back to 1986 when the 42-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park opened. Located immediately adjacent to the Cohen Children’s Hospital, providing the comforts of a home and compassionate care that meet the unique needs of families with sick children. The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital

care. RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day. Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families. Throughout this month, you will learn about more about RMHC New York Metro, including proﬁles of some of their volunteers, the grassroots leadership coming from Long Island Communities that helps support the organization and the aggressive expansion plans for Suffolk County to help families there that are in need. Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds and world-class Arboretum, recently hosted its 5th Annual Arboretum Tour where over 150 guests toured Pinelawn’s magnificent 500-acre Arboretum. The Arboretum, which was awarded Level II status from the International Arboretum Accreditation Program, ArbNet in 2021, is home to three distinct collections of trees. This includes their Noteworthy Collection, which boasts 10 of its highest priority and valued trees, including a Weeping Beech, its oldest tree at over 120 years old, with a crown size spread of 74 feet, and the Nikko Maple, its rarest, whose

species originated in Japan. “Long Island tree lovers don’t need to travel far to learn about some of the world’s most beautiful trees,” said said Kristyn Hovanec, Director of Community Outreach, Marketing Manager, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “We hold our Arboretum tours twice a year, but tickets go fast, so we recommend checking the website periodically, for tickets.” Guided by boardcertified arborist, James Dublar, guests hopped aboard an old-fashioned trolley to receive a guided, educational tour across the grounds, which are intricately and meticulously maintained daily by a trained, full-

time gardening staff. Throughout the tour, guests had the opportunity to exit the trolley and see Pinelawn’s serene landscape and variety of historic trees such as the Copper Beech, Zelkova, and the Kousa Dogwood up-close. “Our staff takes great pride in maintaining a tranquil environment for families throughout our gardens,” said Kristyn. “Each of our collections play an important role to Long Island’s ecosystem and wildlife and we’re honored to have the opportunity to share our breathtaking contribution to our community’s natural beauty with guests in a meaningful way.”

Farmingdale Village - In Full Bloom With summer in full swing, the Village of Farmingdale is in full bloom with spectacular flowers and plantings throughout the Village, downtown, and parks. Village Trustee Cheryl Parisi, oversees the Village Beautification committee, comprised of community volunteers and junior members of the Village Fire Department. They do an amazing job planting flowers, hanging baskets and more throughout the downtown. Special thanks to Trustee Cheryl Parisi for her ongoing beautification efforts, and to all the Village beautification committee volunteers, DPW, the Fire Department and Juniors for their wonderful planting efforts. Gateway to Farmingdale Village: Renovations Completed at Five Corners Park The renovations at Five Corners Park, the Gateway to Farmingdale Village, are completed and the park looks spectacular! The Five Corners Park upgrades included: a new gazebo, shrubs, plantings, benches, signage, stockade fence, flags, lighting, a donated sculpture, and more. Thank you to Nassau County for the $150,000 grant used for two-thirds of the park rehabilitation expenses. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and I - special thanks to Trustee Cheryl Parisi, who spearheaded the entire Five Corners Park renovation project. We thank Cheryl for her tremendous efforts, the park truly beautifies and enhances the Village, especially as the “Gateway” from the north end of the Village at Melville Road to downtown Main Street. Food-Insecure Seniors Are The Focus Of Fair Sponsored By Long Island Cares And PSEG Long Island Long Island ‘s foodinsecure seniors are the focus of the Senior Resource Fair taking place Friday, August 12 at Long Island Cares’ Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. The fair is cosponsored by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank and PSEG Long Island. The purpose of the fair is three-fold: provide increased access to nutritious food, offer takehome fresh produce at a special “farmer’s market,” and expose seniors to advocacy efforts on their behalf and the numerous resources available to them. The event takes place 9 a.m. – noon at the Center for Community Engagement, 75 Davids Drive, Hauppauge. Agencies and organizations presenting to seniors about their services and products include: • AARP • Aetna Medical Care • Alzheimer’s Association • Association for Mental Health and Wellness • Clear Captions • Common Health Care • HWCLI/SNAP • Island Hills Chorus • Melissa’s Wish • Northwell Health (Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education) • Ombudsman Program • PSEG Long Island • Rebuilding Together

Long Island Cares provides emergency food and supplies to 250,000 Long Islanders suffering from food insecurity. In addition to the food bank location in Hauppauge and the more than 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other locations it provides food to, Long Island Cares operates five of its own food pantries, in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, Hampton Bays, Freeport and Bethpage. PSEG Long Island operates the Long Island Power Authority’s transmission and distribution system under a long-term contract. PSEG Long Island is a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. Migraine Facts And Treatment Tips (NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also

reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year. It’s an expense both in terms of career— lost work—and medical costs. Migraine sufferers use 2.5 times the amount of prescription drugs and have six times as many diagnostic tests and services as nonsufferers. Buy now pay later services are responsible for $100 million in annual transactions and have quickly become a go-to financial tool for millions of Americans. Although these options provide an easier way to make purchases, they aren’t without risks. “People love the convenience, but there remains a lot of misunderstanding surrounding BNPL services and their impact on people’s financial lives,” said Amy Maliga, a financial educator with Take Charge America, a nonprofit

credit counseling and debt management agency. “With that confusion, it’s easy to miss the potential risks. That’s why it’s always important to take a closer look at a new service or product — especially ones that make it easier to part with your hard-earned money.” Before using BNPL services, Maliga says it’s important to keep in mind the following: They are a form of credit. BNPL providers may promote themselves as a simpler way to pay for everyday purchases without relying on debt or

credit, but don’t be fooled: BNPL payments are a type of credit. And if you miss a payment, some services charge late fees or interest. Be cautious when using these services, as you can easily get in over your head. You’ll likely spend more. There’s a reason retailers aggressively promote BNPL: People tend to spend more using these services. A LendingTree survey found two-thirds of shoppers spent more using BNPL plans than they would have otherwise. Before completing that latest purchase, check your

budget and bank account. Be sure you can really afford what you’re buying instead of putting yourself at risk of falling into debt. Inconsistent credit score impacts. Most BNPL providers don’t report on-time payment data to the major credit bureaus, meaning you receive none of the upsides of responsible repayment. However, negative events like missed payments or collections activity, are likely to be reported. This makes it even more critical to make your BNPL payments on time and avoid missing any.

No consumer protections. Because of BNPL’s standard fourinstallment payment plans, these services fall outside the purview of the Truth in Lending Act. Translation: Consumers have no protection from any potential predatory or deceptive lending practices with BNPL providers. Federal law requires five installments before triggering any regulations. Department Of Environmental Control Works To Install Eelgrass Awareness Signage Along The Great South Bay

The Town of Babylon Department of Environmental Control recently collaborated with the South Shore Estuary Reserve (SSER) office to create educational signage that raises ecological awareness to the importance of eelgrass in the Great South Bay. Eelgrass is a type of underwater marine plant found throughout the Northeast Atlantic coast. The plant has many benefits to marine life, including the absorption of nutrients, stabilizing shorelines, providing marine

habitat, storing carbon, etc. The plant is threatened by poor water quality and increasing water temperatures among other factors. According to SSER, about 45% of eelgrass has been lost since 2002. Prior to the start of the summer 2022 season, the Town has installed the signs about the importance of preserving eelgrass at three parks; Cedar Beach Marina, Tanner Park and Venetian Shores. It is anticipated that other south shore townships will also install the signs

within their jurisdictions. “It is our hope that this signage will help inform the public of the benefits of eelgrass to our waters, and teach vital steps we can all take to help protect this delicate plant,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “The signage is a great educational tool for the families who utilize our facilities in the summer months.”
