Benjamin Cohen and Danielle Cohen, two emergency medical technicians with Northwell Health’s Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) in Syosset, were recognized as Stars of Life by the American Ambulance Association (AAA) at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The dynamic duo, who are unrelated, were joined by Northwell colleagues William Bailey (Lenox Hill Hospital) and Robert Mazzo (Staten Island University Hospital), who were also recognized. The AAA highlights excellence and contributions made by EMS workers across the county at the annual event in the nation’s capitol.

Mr. Cohen, a resident of Searingtown, has been an EMT for six years. After working in a hospital emergency department, he says there was no hesitation to get out in the field and into an ambulance himself. He got his EMT certification and joined Northwell Health’s CEMS in 2014. Mr. Cohen says it was the strong moral structure he had growing up that influenced him. “It’s good to put yourself into situations where you can help people. That was a big drive,” he said. “My father is a dentist and he was also a lifeguard so he always got us into that. When he had a heart attack it was scary for the whole family because we thought we’d lose him. I guess in the back of your mind you always hope you have the skill to help somebody if that were to happen to a

PETTY RUMOURS - New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto and Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand recently attended the first performance of the “Music Under the Stars” summer concert series featuring Petty Rumours, a Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac tribute band, held at Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park. Supervisor Saladino thanked the entertainers for a wonderful performance and for kicking off another great summer with the “Music Under the Stars” program.

Shootout for Soldiers

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently hosted “Shootout for Soldiers” a 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams. The Shootout for Soldiers is an annual 24 hour lacrosse event that benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport

they love in a unique way while also raising funds to benefit the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces.” The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. This year, approximately $127,000 was raised in support of organizations that benefit our troops. In addition,

the Long Island Air Force Association conducted a special ceremony to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their service in the conflict. Supervisor Saladino was joined by members of the All Veterans Group, a group of active and retired military members, who use parachute demonstrations and skydiving to promote patriotism and veteran issues.

A Funny Thing Happened A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close

for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

This year’s ride kicked off at the Babylon Town Hall. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer welcomed the veterans and riders to the event and spoke of how proud we are of all our veterans and participants. Adam Faine, the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride Manger, presented Matias Ferreira with an official Wounded Warrior Cycling Jersey and he was also presented with a Proclamation from Supervisor Schaffer. Mr. Ferreira, a former Marine who lost both legs in Afghanistan, became a Suffolk County Police officer in March of 2017. Wounded Warrior Spokesperson and Veteran Jeremiah Pauley spoke to the crowd about the struggles veterans face when returning from combat. Mr. Pauley was

deployed to Tal Afar, Iraq where he was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) which sent shrapnel into his right arm above the elbow. Also speaking were Councilwoman and Veteran Jackie Gordon and County Executive Steve Bellone. The Wounded Warrior Project provides services to service members, in both the United States and internationally, who have been injured during combat and works to raise awareness regarding issues that affect them as they continue to adjust to their new life.

On a recent beautiful Wednesday evening, Lorraine Stanton, Women’s Club of Farmingdale Recording Secretary, presented “A Moment of History” on the club’s founder, Abigail E. Leonard, as local residents gathered to enjoy the lovely music of the Farmingdale Village Pops.

Lorraine, who is also Vice President of the Farmingdale Bethpage Historical Society, spoke of Abigail’s past achievements with quality of life issues in the Village, such as safer and better schools for students and parents and co-founding the Farmingdale Public Library, in addition to

the Women’s Club of Farmingdale. She informed the audience that the club will honor Abigail this fall by placing an historical marker at her still occupied home on Hallock Street in honor of her leadership efforts in the Long Island Suffrage Movement.

On Friday, July 21st, for the 10th consecutive year, thousands rode through the streets of Babylon alongside proud veterans to support wounded service members. This year’s event had over 1,500 riders participate alongside more than 50 wounded Veterans. Since the first Soldier Ride in 2008, over $750,000 has been raised for injured service members. National Roller Coaster Day On Wednesday, August 16th, Long Island Adventureland will be celebrating National Roller Coaster day with FREE rides on both of their two awesome coasters for guests who donate to the park’s annual school supply drive. That’s right;

FREE rides on Turbulence and the Lady Bug all day for guests that donate school supplies on Wednesday, August 16th. The Turbulence Coaster was added to the local landmark park in the summer of 2015, and continues to be a favorite

among adults and children. The cars on this custommade Mack coaster spin freely as they travel the tracks, giving riders 360 degrees of thrills and a unique experience every time they ride. The Lady Bug Coaster is a kiddie coaster that packs

The program runs through December 31st, 2017. “With many families having two working parents and little time to visit Town Hall, I’m happy we can assist residents seeking to update their homes with the convenience of SameDay-Permits and offices on both the north and south shores of our town,” Supervisor Saladino added.
