As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes, something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. Eileen is very dedicated to The Emergency Shelter of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch, where she provides her services for free to their residents when they are open in the winter months. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each

Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping those in need look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

Metamorphosis “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Saladino proudly partnered with Long Island Cares for their 7th annual Legislative Pet Food Drive, which took place over the months of February and March. The drive focused on

collecting for our residents’ pets through Baxter’s Pet Pantry, which supplies free pet food and supplies to pet-owning families in need in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Supervisor Saladino and the Town was honored at

the event for over 1,664 pounds of pet food and supplies donations made by our residents, which will in turn keep pets at home with their loved ones, well-fed, and out of shelters.

Nearly 250 people recently gathered at Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, NY for the ACLD Foundation 2018 Annual Golf Outing, which raised more than $155,000 to benefit Bethpageheadquartered Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) along with the services as well programs it provides for adults and children with autism, learning and developmental disabilities. This year’s Golf Outing honoree was Lane Sieman of Long Beach, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Long Beach-based Chem Rx Pharmacy Services, a long-term care pharmacy servicing the medicationrelated needs of people in residential supportive apartments and homes, intermediate care, adult day care, assisted living and skilled nursing care facilities. With the launch

of ACLD’s Telemedicine Program in 2017, Chem Rx has been an integral partner in helping to decrease unnecessary emergency room visits for adults residing in ACLD community residences and apartments, which is why Mr. Sieman was selected as this year’s Golf Outing honoree. The two organizations have been working together for nearly three years. An ardent supporter of people of different abilities, Mr. Sieman spoke of his early life experiences while accepting his award that included his mother being a special education teacher and the fond memories of volunteering for the Special Olympics while growing up in the midwest. “ACLD Foundation is truly grateful of Lane’s support, friendship and commitment to our future,” said Alan Spiegel, ACLD Foundation President. “Lane has
