Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or
PM. ·TGI Friday’s presents Happy Hour at the Bar every Monday through Sunday from open to close, including $3 beers, $5 cocktails and $5 appetizers. Student Meets Henry Louis Gates Jr. Farmingdale High School student Elise Atkins, along with Assistant Superintendent Dr. Joan Ripley and teacher Esther Kramer, were thrilled to receive an invite to attend a recent book talk with teacher and historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. He discussed his new book, Stony the Road, about
Reconstruction after the Civil War. “Meeting Henry Louis Gates was so surreal!” said Elise. “He not only connected the patterns of African American rights in the 1860s and 70’s to the rights they had previously, but linked Reconstruction to modern day politics and issues. His message is something I will carry
with me for life—the key to solving today’s problems is to learn from the past.” Elise was able to grab a private moment to tell Dr. Gates that her greatgrandfather had been a colleague of his at Harvard. “I got a high-five, which was an added bonus!”
