Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I

am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I

attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Soldier Ride Held

The 7th Annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride was held in the Town of Babylon recently, where over 1,100 riders took part in a 25 mile bicycle ride throughout the Town to raise over $100,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Over 60 wounded service members took part in the ride – some of whom used state of the art adaptive hand cycles, tricycles and bicycles. Among the hundreds of riders was Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, who recently retired from the United States Army Reserves after 30 years of service both home and abroad, as well as

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer welcomed riders at a brief ceremony that was held in front of Town Hall in Lindenhurst, where remarks were also delivered by County Executive Bellone, Soldier Ride Director Dan Schnock and Army Specialist Jason Braase. The 7th Annual Soldier Ride officially began at approximately 9:30 a.m., when the riders disembarked from Town Hall and made their way through the 25 mile route, passing notable landmarks like Old Town

Hall in Babylon Village and crossing over the iconic Robert Moses Bridge for the ride’s last stretch to Overlook Beach, where they were treated to a barbeque with refreshments. The Wounded Warrior Project provides services to service members, in both the United States and internationally, who have been injured in combat and works to raise awareness regarding issues that affect them as they continue to adjust to their new life. The Town of Babylon has partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project since 2008 and has raised over $600,000 for the organization.

Art Show Reception Held BACCA hosted its 25th Annual Judged Art Show reception on Friday, June 13th, at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village. It was a sultry night and the room was filled with dozens of artists and visitors. The guest judge was Diane Romanello, a selftaught artist known for her scenic paintings characterized by beauty and romance in the natural world. On hand were Town of Babylon Councilman Antonio Martinez, Councilman Thomas Donnelly and BACCA President Shawn Cullinane to present

awards to the deserving and talented artists. The Best in Show Award went to Ronald F. Horton, for his work entitled “Hope.” One of the coveted prizes in the BACCA show is the Supervisor’s Award, which was given to David P.
