Equity First Foundation

www.EquityFirstFoundation.org Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. EFF has been on the front line of helping families in need with food and assisting with a health care PPE program. This pandemic has opened our community up to more financial hardships then imagined. This organization is asking for your help in becoming an advocate for their food drop initiative to help families like yours or your neighbors. Hunger does not discriminate in a time like this. If you would like to lead a team and assist with a food drive, become a drop off location or just help spread the word, they could use your help! The most wanted items are gift cards, non perishables items, and hygiene/cleaning supplies. Her name is embroidered on a handmade linen tablecloth, along with other members and past presidents, that is still used by the club today at their general meetings. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Linda has been a member of the Junior League of the WCF since 1977. At this local level, she has chaired many committees, was Club Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Historian, 1st Vice President and President (twice). Currently, she is the Junior Parliamentarian. On the state level, she has volunteered as Chair of Resolutions, Elections, Fundraising, By-Laws, NYS Signature Project on Domestic Violence and was elected State Treasurer twice. She recently ended her tenure as Past President of the GFWC Middle Atlantic Region. Following her term as President-Elect, she will now go on to serve as State President. Linda also follows in the footsteps of Jane Lee Nosal who was the first WCF member to be elected as President of the

GFWC-NYS. Other WCF members are also serving on GFWCNYS committees, including WCF Tina Diamond, Chair of the President’s Signature Project: Prevention of Domestic Violence; Barbara Hoerner, Photography Chair and Dolores Cianciabella, Island Metro District Chair of Creative Writing. In today’s world, Linda plans to strive to assimilate the “powers of healing and regeneration” to make her presidency effective in dealing with unexpected challenges and to use “grace and understanding” to inspire each member to live up to their fullest potential. We wish Linda a wonderful and successful tenure as President.

Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Local FHS Graduate Secures GFWC-NYS Music Award

The Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) was very proud to present a $1,000 music award to Jonathan Doty, a Farmingdale High School 2020 graduate. The Olive B. O’Connor Music Award is presented every year, to a qualifying candidate, by the club’s parent organization, The General Federation of Women’s Clubs – New York State. The winner must be a resident of NYS, be graduating from an approved NYS Education Dept. High School, Private School or Academy and have had preparatory instruction, either in voice or instrument, at the high school level. The award must be used for continued musical education and be approved by the NYS Music

Award Chairman. Women’s clubs throughout NYS submitted the names of qualifying students before the March 1 deadline. Jonathan’s application was submitted by Bea Ferrari, a WCF sponsoring club member and retired FHS teacher. Jonathan has been singing since he was in 6th grade and studying voice since 8th grade. He has been performing high school musicals since his Freshman year where he has had the male lead every year. These include “Horton” in Seussical, “The Baker” in Into the Woods, “Nick Piazza” in Fame and most recently “Link Larkin” in Hairspray. Also included in his resume are many performances in

“outside” theatre shows. At FHS, Jonathan was part of the Mixed Chorus for 4 years, Vocal Jazz for 3 years, and the select Barbershop Quartet for 3 years. He was Bass Section Leader and has gone to All County Mixed Chorus for a consecutive 2 years. In addition to singing, Jonathan plays the French Horn and has been one of the Drum Majors for the FHS Marching Band. Jonathan will be studying Musical Theatre in college and has already been accepted into two schools for the BFA Musical Theatre Program. Congratulations and much continued success!
