Learn to Skate at Oyster Bay Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this fall by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. The ice skating center offers skating classes for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities all throughout the year.

Registration for Series 1 (which runs September 8th through October 31st) will begin on August 10th. Skaters

On July 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined hundreds of patriots from points near and far in the Town of Babylon’s Soldier Ride to support the Wounded Warrior Project. In addition to the Soldier Ride celebrating its 8th Anniversary, it also witnessed a 10% increase in rider participation. The event kicked off at the Town of Babylon Town Hall, where riders and countless supporters gathered in anticipation of the day’s activities. During the opening ceremony, the wounded

warriors participating in the ride were appropriately spotlighted; this group included warriors from Israel and the United Kingdom. The warriors received a thunderous applause coupled with proud cheers of “USA! USA!” The riders subsequently took off for the 25 mile journey accompanied by police and other public safety personnel. En route to the finish line at Overlook Beach, riders enjoyed well-deserved respites at St. John the Baptist High School and Lindenhurst Middle

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reflection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

Fair Set to Take Place

SALUTE TO AMERICA - The Salute to America concert performance by Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops Orchestra was recently held at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa as part of the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Music Under the Stars” summer program. Military veterans were recognized by the local legislators on this occasion, and Supervisor John Venditto presented a citation to event sponsor Michael Segreti of Astoria Bank for helping to make the “Salute to America” concert possible.

The organizing committee of Freedom Fairs has put together a community-themed Fair slated to take place at the Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, July 30th through August 2nd. The Fair is put together in conjunction with the Long Island Teen Challenge International (LITCI), Tutor Central Inc., Eminent Events LLC, and key members of Community Outreach at the Commissioner of Police office. The Fair will feature over 20 different types of

amusement rides, carnival games, food and craft vendors, family-themed magicians and illusionists, jugglers, contortionists and balloon artists, :and live music and bands. The plan is to have something for all ages, particularly focused on families in the community. The fair is expected to receive several thousand visitors during its five day duration, and we look forward to having everyone come in and participate and have a good time while we celebrate our community. Admission is free;

enjoying the band and live music is free. So is parking. National Qualifiers

Ultimate Champions Taekwondo Association is comprised of 15 Taekwondo schools throughout the New York City and Long Island area. They would like to congratulate all of their athletes who qualified to compete at the National level. Sixty-seven UCTA students traveled to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to compete in the 2015 Amateur Athletic Union National Taekwondo Championships. Eleven of those students then

traveled to Austin, TX, to compete in the USA Taekwondo National Championships. These dedicated students have trained relentlessly with their Masters to prepare for the National competitions, and were rewarded for their efforts with 21 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 29 bronze medals. They would like to specifically recognize the outstanding accomplishments of eight students. One athlete won his division and was

named AAU National Team Member. Six athletes qualified to compete in the National Team Trials in the Cadet and Junior divisions in August based on their exceptional performance. And finally, one local athlete will be competing in the USA Taekwondo Senior Team Trials, with the hopes of eventually making the USA Olympic Team. They are proving Themselves to be one of the top teams, not only in the New York area, but in the United States.
