Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 16th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation. Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to fluctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.
That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free flow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways. Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”
Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner. There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged? As with most things, recognizing a flaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement. Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. Doctorate Degrees
Farmingdale School District has two more doctors in the house. Jennifer DeHayes Assistant Principal at Woodward Parkway Elementary School - and Christopher Peterson - Assistant Principal of Northside Elementary School - have both received their Doctorate Degrees of Education in Administrative and Instructional Leadership from St. John’s University. After two-and-a-half years of coursework, and many months spent writing their dissertations, they received their diplomas during the graduation ceremony, held May 15th, 2018. Both DeHayes and Peterson had the same advisor for their dissertations, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, Autumn Tooms-Cypres - whom they mutually adored. “I basically clung to her leg and never let go,” grinned Dr. Peterson. Dr. DeHayes shared his sentiment. “She was like a momma bird, supporting me one hundred percent.” Dr. Peterson pursued his doctorate immediately after earning his administrative degree, and prior to having a family. His first child, a daughter, was born just as he began writing his dissertation. He said, “I really wanted to earn my Ed.D early in
my career so I could put my best self into the role of administrator. I wanted this wisdom as my career progressed, and now I have over thirty years to use the education I received.” His topic - Cultural Proficiency - gave him the opportunity to do a deep dive into researching, analyzing, and preparing best practices in education for Long Island’s changing demographics. Dr. DeHayes wrote her dissertation about the current state of communication between classroom teachers and reading teachers; taking a look at the key factors that enhance or hinder communication. Her mentor, the aforementioned Dr. ToomsCypres was so impressed with her dissertation that she submitted it on Jennifer’s behalf to the University of Oxford - something she’s done only five times in 17 years. Oxford was impressed too and invited Dr. DeHayes to present her thesis to them. Later this summer, she’s bound for England with her family to share her academic research with the esteemed institution. Dr. DeHayes has been the Assistant Principal at Woodward Parkway for more than six years. Prior to joining the school administration, Ms. DeHayes was an elementary school teacher
for eleven years in various grades, and a reading teacher for four years. She has a Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership, with a major in School District Leadership/School Building Leadership from Stony Brook University, NY. She earned her Master’s Degree in Reading from Long Island University, Brookville, NY, and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in the area of Elementary Education & Special Education from St. Joseph’s College. Dr. Peterson began his doctoral pursuit just a few short months before joining the Farmingdale administration as Assistant Principal at Northside Elementary School. Prior to that he taught for eight years - four in general education and four in special education - in the Smithtown and Middle County School Districts. He graduated with a degree in Childhood Education from SUNY New Paltz and attended St. Joseph’s to earn his Masters - and received his Administrative Degree at SUNY Stony Brook. The doctoral degree is an opportunity for educational leaders to enhance their knowledge and skills in research and current trends in education, with a view to becoming administrative and policy leaders in the field of education. The present and future students of the Farmingdale School District will be the recipients of everything Dr. DeHayes and Dr. Peterson have learned and plan to put into practice. They both summarized their experience as lifechanging and highly rewarding. “The process to get a doctorate is intense!” said Ms. DeHayes. “But I feel like I’m a better person for it.” “If I didn’t love what I was doing it would be work,” said Mr. Peterson, “But I love it!”

Show on the Green Join us once again for an exploration of ART as the 24th annual Show on the Montauk Green returns on August 17th-19th. Presented by the Montauk Artists’ Association, the Montauk Green will blossom with original and handmade fine art, created through the visions and talents of local, regional and national artisans. Know that your gracious support of this event and the artisans has made it one of Long Island’s top fine art festivals while annually providing essential support for the not-for-profit Montauk Artists’ Association. The event opens Friday at noon. The artwork brought to Montauk by these visionary artisans transforms the Montauk Green into an outdoor gallery of art. Walk through the Green discovering incredible creations in such art mediums as painting,
sculpture, jewelry, photography, glass, ceramics, mixed-media, woodworking and more. All the artists creating these pieces are present throughout the event. Enjoy the opportunity to talk with the artisans and learn how they developed their art forms. Learn how they created the specific pieces you purchase. Should you not see exactly what you desire, speak with the artists about commissioning a unique piece of original art made specifically for you! The 24th annual Show on the Green opens Friday August 17th at 12 noon and is open until 6 p.m. Both Saturday and Sunday the art festival is open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. One of the most fascinating aspects of discovering art is what you discover of yourself through the process of
seeing and connecting with art. You will find it is a beautiful experience! The annual Show on the Green is produced by the Montauk Artists’ Association.
