Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can

have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media. Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way. Lastly, this organization is looking for people to fill the following volunteer positions: Crew Members, Electricians, Plumbers and Home Visitors.

They Will Surf Again 100 People Living with Paralysis Will Surf at Rockaway Beach on Saturday, July 27, 2019. Life Rolls On presents, “They Will Surf Again,” its signature quality of life program for people with disabilities. The event is free for adaptive athletes and their families, and takes place at the beach on Beach 67th St. in Rockaway Beach. Participants are welcomed at 8:30 am, and the Adaptive Surf Clinic goes from 9:00

am to 4:00 pm. Registration is required. Founded by world champion quadriplegic surfer Jesse Billauer, Life Rolls On began in 2001 in Santa Monica CA, and now presents an annual tour of 12 events on the West Coast, Gulf Coast, and East Coast. Each “They Will Surf Again” event attracts 100 adaptive surfers, 400 volunteers, and hundreds of cheering supporters.

John O’Meara of the Farmingdale UFSD was honored by the Board for earning a distinguished office with SkillsUSA as a national

delegate representing New York State. Considerable effort goes into qualifying for the annual SkillsUSA competition. All Barry Tech students have a double workload, completing not only their Barry Tech assignments, but also satisfying full courses of study at their home schools. Add to that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how tirelessly these students work. The competition is part of SkillsUSA’s mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. The program helps establish industry standards for jobskill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants. The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes SkillsUSA as a “successful model of an employer-driven youth development program.”

Expert Level Knowledge

Fourth grade students at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School recently expanded their knowledge of certain topics by taking part in a Be an Expert project. This past winter, students were each given a Be an Expert bag that contained several books on an area of focus. They

completed assignments for each book that equipped them with information and facts. The culmination of the students’ work was presented on June 5, when they shared their finished projects. Themes included the American Revolution, auto racing, inventors and Ellis Island. Students had the choice of creating a trifold or a

PowerPoint demonstration to communicate the knowledge that might qualify them as experts. Following presentations, classmates added questions, comments and remarks based on the individual’s assignment. The district congratulates the fourth graders who put in the effort to become experts.

These students participated in a series of timed events related to their courses of study at Barry Tech, as well as in competitions in leadership and professional development. The winners were honored by the BOCES Board for their impressive performances and received official certificates congratulating them on their respective wins. The Board honored seven first-place winners. Two were part of the American Spirit Team: Tatiana Cornejo of the Island Trees UFSD and Nicole Linares of the Long Beach City SD, both of whom are Medical Assisting students. Congrats to Barbara Hoerner for receiving her 25-year club member certificate and to Tina Diamond and Cheryl Parisi for being nominated and accepted into the NYS Honor Roll. Well deserved milestones for all 3 ladies. Awards were also given to Cheryl Parisi for Photography – World in Pictures, LIiving Things and to Loda Romanelli for Creative Writing, Short Story. Several club programs also were honored: 1st Place Public Issues and NYS President

Special Project – Child Abuse Prevention; 2nd Place Community Service Education, International Outreach and Junior Special Project: Advocates for Children; 3rd Place Membership Special Project and Communications & Identity. At the Farmingdale High School Senior Awards Ceremony, the WCF proudly presented several monetary awards to graduating seniors, including a special art award in memory of club member Carla Peipert. The club also made several donations to local charities with awards and donations totaling over $5,000. Congratulations to CoPresidents Cheryl Parisi and Lorraine Stanton for a wonderfully productive and impressive club year.
