5K Run For Vets A Success

he Fourth Annual 5K Run for Veterans at MacArthur Airport was the most successful race at the airport to date. A record-breaking 2,400 people signed up to participate as runners and walkers, and along with sponsorships from more than 100 companies, raised over $120,000 for 9-1-1 Veterans. This local organization is dedicated to assisting Long Island veterans. Thanks to all who participated.

One Town, One Book Essay Contest

Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia would like to invite teens and pre-teens to participate in a Town-wide essay contest as part of this year’s program for One Town, One Book: Oyster Bay Reads. “At this point in the program, I hope countless Town residents are enjoying the inspiring story of August Pullman that is chronicled in Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, as much as I am,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “In its first year, the program was a resounding success, and I am both proud and excited to have it return this summer and offer residents the chance to participate. This year we are very excited to have chosen Wonder as our book selection, and have numerous events planned. This essay contest will serve as a way to get the younger kids within the Town involved in the program.” Councilwoman Alesia went on to note that teens and pre-teens who wish to participate in the essay contest, are asked to read Wonder, and write a short essay, no longer than 500 words, on how the thematic issues within the book resonated with you, such as the spotlight

Winners will be selected and honored by the Town at the August 6th meeting of the Town board, and will receive a gift basket graciously donated by the Barnes and Noble located in Massapequa. Throughout the months of June and July, participants in the program have read Wonder in preparation for a series of Town-wide events. In addition to these events, each library within the Town has enthusiastically joined up with ‘One Town, One Book: Oyster Bay Reads’ and will be hosting events of their own, to tie in with this year’s selection. The first Town event will take place on Thursday, July 18th at 7 p.m., at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. This event will feature a panel discussion featuring disability advocates from across Long Island, and will facilitate a dialogue

between residents in attendance and the event’s guest speakers. Additional events include a dramatic re-enactment of key scenes from the novel by a local theatrical troupe, which will take place on August 1st at 7 p.m. at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, located at 999 Old

Country Road, Plainview and a book discussion/ lecture event, facilitated by Anna Katsavos, Ph. D., Professor Emeritus at SUNY Nassau, Literature and Women’s studies, taking place on August 15th at 7 p.m. at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park Community Center, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury. Muscarella said the unique promotion is part of the Town’s efforts to build the response to its summer blood drive. “With summer in full swing, our attention tends to focus on barbecues, going to the beach, taking a vacation and the other pleasures of the season, so donating blood is not generally on our minds,” said Councilman Muscarella, who has worked closely with Supervisor Venditto for many years on the Town’s blood drive. “The need for blood is continual, though, and the summer usually puts a strain on supplies. Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before ﬂight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way. Not so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever

hassles come along with our “relaxing” vacations. Having never ﬂown before, this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already. But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs

slightly less than a 12 yearold. Because, let’s face it – you can pack it, but can you carry it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all. By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up. One can only hope.
