The Charity of The Month for July is:
Equity First Foundation
Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:
career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.
Welcome back to Farmingdale Village!! Thankfully, we are moving ahead with the phased-in re-opening, the Long Island region entered Phase 4 of New York Forward on July 8th! Farmingdale Village Hall re-opened to the public and the hours are 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. with social distancing, face coverings, etc. Village Hall also has new plexiglass, cleaning/disinfecting and other necessary safety compliance measures in place. The public can also call Village Hall at (516) 249-0093. Farmingdale Village Public meetings continue to be held virtually and links are posted on the Village website, www. farmingdalevillage.com.

According to NY State executive order, courts are still closed. The public can speak to a court clerk during the pandemic by phone for court related questions at 516-2932292. Court sessions are not expected to resume in July. Please consider donating to those in need during this crisis. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, shopping for seniors, family members or donating within the local community. Farmingdale Village is collecting nonperishable food donations for those in need in the local community. Donations can be dropped off and placed in the food pantry box located inside the entrance to Village Hall from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday – Friday. through July. Additionally, landscaping upgrades are planned for Five Corners Park at the intersection of Main Street and Melville Road. A special thank you to Trustee Cheryl Parisi for her ongoing efforts to improve the look of the village. As previously mentioned; Parking lot 4 behind Dark Horse / the Firehouse/Village Hall is completed with the exception of poles which we expect to be installed by the end of July. It includes a new fueling station behind fire house with new pump and increased fuel capacity for village vehicles to make sure we aren’t caught short in an emergency. And it’s both about beautification and also Access/Safety. Lot 4 originally had 270 parking stalls and now with the new additions by cross-access and lot layout; we currently have 348 parking stalls. This does not include the fire department section which we gained one stall; in for a total of 22. The LIRR and National Grid continue to work in
the Village on upgrades, also expected to be completed by the end of July. National Grid is also scheduled to complete their new gas main and service connections by the end of July. Plans are being made to repave Main Street in the central business district in the near future along with new lighting and sidewalk rehabilitation. The Village will be using grant money from the County of Nassau for the Main Street improvements. Update on New York State Route 109 (Fulton Street) repaving; the Village received notification of the contract vendor for paving Route 109 from the State. As most of you know, the state roads, Route 24 and Route 109, are Truck routes, keeping trucks off of the residential streets. National Grid has been doing work on Route 109, and we will follow-up for a timeline update for the re-paving work. The Village continues to communicate with and work with County Executive, Laura Curran, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor, Joseph Saladino,

June and July are filled with occasions to celebrate, including graduations, birthdays and weddings. While these celebrations have evolved into car parades and other events to maintain safe social distancing, one thing remains the same: Metallic party balloons can start fires and cause power outages if they drift into overhead electrical wires and equipment. “The safety of our customers and employees is PSEG Long Island’s top priority,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Mylar balloons add extra festivity to our celebrations, but when released, they do present a threat to our electrical system and the safety of those nearby. We all need reasons to celebrate these days, so let’s spread the word and make sure we don’t let a stray balloon get in the way of that.” The distinctive metallic coating on Mylar balloons conducts electricity. Because of this, when a Mylar balloon is exposed to a power line, it can cause a short circuit. This short circuit can lead to power outages, fires and possible injuries. Safety is always PSEG Long Island’s top priority. To reduce the risk of outages and injuries, customers should keep the following safety tips in mind: • Mylar balloons and other decorations should be kept away from overhead power lines and equipment. • Make sure balloons are secured to a weight that is heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. Keep balloons tethered and attached to the weights at all times. • Always properly dispose of Mylar balloons by safely puncturing the balloon in several places to release the helium that otherwise could cause the balloon to float away. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or other type of debris that is entangled in an overhead power line.
