For the third consecutive year, the Town of Oyster Bay will host the “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This year’s round-theclock event will begin on the morning of July 21st at 9 a.m. and continue non-stop for 24 hours until July 22nd at 9 a.m. The event is held annually for the benefit of American Military personnel. In addition, the Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony at 5 p.m. to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate the

What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through. This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden. They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style. To each his or her own,

Shootout for Soldiers Registered players and teams will be given jerseys and placed on either the Stars team or the Stripes team and matched against a team of similar ability. The score is cumulative resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. During the first two years, the outcome of the games was not decided until the very end. Last year, the Stars defended their title with a victory of 282274. In the first event, the Stars defeated the Stripes 214-210. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players with each group taking the field for one hour. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play.

premiers, raffles, kids activities and games, a boardwalk vending village and two NYSEA summer blow-out parties for people of all ages. Surf Week 2016 will start July 13th and run through July 17th. This year’s centerpiece, the NYSEA Open surf contest, will be held on the most promising wave day of the event. Because of the fluid start time, competitors and the public will follow nysurfweek.com via email and social media to stay updated on conditions and potential start times. This year’s contest is open to the first 32 online entrants and the top prize will be $3,000. Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium place in previous years. Of course, even when the top surfers aren’t in the water there will be plenty to enjoy. A contest for younger surfers will begin at 8 a.m. on July 16th and the kids always draw gasps from the crowds for their skill and their hard-charging approach to surfing. (Remember: a six-foot wave is double overhead when you’re three feet tall.) Additional surf-centered events will include not-for-profit outings for Adelphi University’s Camp Abilities and the Henry Viscardi School, whose students cope with severe physical challenges. These outings represent a chance for disabled individuals to share in the thrill of the ocean in the company of experienced instructors. Cliff Skudin, Will’s brother and also a professional surfer, has a master’s degree in special education, and both siblings believe sharing the sport of surfing lays down the foundation for the rest of the event and encapsulates the true meaning of New York Surf Week. PLAYGROUND DEDICATION - Mayor Jeffrey P. Pravato cut the ceremonial ribbon at the dedication of the new playground at Brady Park. The County of Nassau was instrumental in securing a grant which helped make the upgrade possible. A handicapped swing was also installed with the help of Girl Scout Gold Award recipient Katie Hayes. The playground is now accessible to children of all abilities.

Appreciation Day On Thursday, June 30th, a group of mothers representing Humans Wearing Baby Humans of Long Island (HWBHLI), a local peerto-peer babywearing group, dropped off baked goods, pictures, and cards handmade by group members and their children, to the Suffolk County Police Department’s 1st Precinct in West Babylon. The first of its monthly

Appreciation Days, HWBHLI sought to thank the more than 300 men and women of the 1st precinct for their hard work and sacrifice. “We had a wonderful visit. The officers and staff were so kind and grateful,” said Lisa Michaud, one of HWBHLI’s group leaders and event organizer. “Many in our group have family members who are law enforcement officers, some are officers themselves.

We wanted to show how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make every day for our communities. As parents, we also valued this opportunity to teach and model respect and gratitude to our children.” HWBHLI’s Appreciation Days will be a monthly group event, honoring law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other local Long Islanders who have a significant impact on the community.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and members of the Town Board welcomed representatives from the nonprofit organization First Company Pink to the July 6th Babylon Town Board Meeting. First Company Pink, which raises funds to support breast cancer research, recently launched a program called “Got Checked?” to raise breast health awareness for girls

and women at a younger age. The purpose of the “Got Checked?” slogan is to have the government recognize breast cancer awareness as a year-round campaign. First Company Pink will be joining forces with the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition here in the Town of Babylon to promote their important cause.
