This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. At one point, as traffic

crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.” Coming next week: The End. {Part II}

The ceremony was laced with special performances featuring members of the graduating class, including the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Stand by

Following the presentation of the last diploma, the graduates celebrated by throwing their caps in the air. Graduates reunited with their loved ones as official alumni of the Plainedge School District.

Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently joined with board members and staff of the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) at an annual award ceremony to recognize local graduating high school seniors who plan on continuing their education at technical schools. A total of eleven $500 scholarships were distributed to the students,

all residents of the Town of Babylon. These hardworking students will learn important skills that will contribute to the development of a sophisticated workforce that’s needed on Long Island, an ideal that remains a core component of the IDA’s mission. This year’s scholarship winners are Enrique Murcia, Brandon Lugo, Monique McDonald, Serafina Shaner, Patrick J.

Nealon, Devyn Chambers, Ryan Dilavore, Kelsey Christiansen, Brenden Lynch, Hailey Smith, and Azly Gonzalez. Councilwoman Gordon congratulated each of the students and wished them well with their career pursuits. Councilwoman Gordon is pictured with winning students from this year’s Babylon IDA Scholarship Awards.

Poster Contest Winners first place. In Division 2 (Grades 3-4-5) Woodward Parkway Elementary School students also claimed the top three titles. Jessica Gilberg was the third place winner, Ashlinn Kelly was the second place winner and Josie Hoffman was the first place winner. In Division 3 (Grades 6-78), from Howitt Middle School, Julia Toscano was the second place winner. The first place posters will be judged at the state level in Albany in July.

At its June 29th Annual Meeting, the Nassau County Village Officials Association (NCVOA) elected Ralph Ekstrand, mayor of the Village of Farmingdale, 1st vice president for 2017-2018. The NCVOA represents 64 incorporated villages with more than 450,000 residents.

As 1st vice president, Mayor Ekstrand will play a vital role in establishing NCVOA policies and directing the organization’s efforts on behalf of village residents throughout Nassau County. Along with Mayor Ekstrand, the following NCVOA officers were installed:

Music Under the Stars The second week of the 2017 Town of Oyster Bay Music Under the Stars concert series kicks off with the Town’s annual “Salute to America” veterans appreciation night featuring a performance by country/classic rock band “SouthBound,” at John J. with “BonJourney NY,” which will be held at Harry Tappen Beach located at Shore Road in Glenwood Landing on Wednesday, July 12th. BonJourney NY is a unique tribute band that blends music from rock icons Bon Jovi and Journey. Their high energy and spirit are sure to entertain residents. Prepare for a trip to the 60s & 70s by a performance from “Groovin” on July 15th at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. Best Community for Music For the fourth consecutive year, the Farmingdale School District has been awarded the honor of “Best Communities for Music Education” by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). Receiving a “Best Communities for Music Education Award” means the District has demonstrated commitment to providing access to music programs and high music-education standards. “As part of our commitment to educating the whole child, the Farmingdale School District provides every student with a robust fine arts curriculum, including music, art and drama,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Lorentz. “We are honored to receive this designation from the NAMM foundation. It is a well-deserved tribute to the dedication, diligence, passion and excellence of

our students, our music department and our community.” Receiving this award recognizes the investment of the District’s administration, the Board of Education, teachers and parents who believe in music education and are working to ensure that music is part of a child’s complete education. During the 18 years since its inception, the NAMM survey measures budgetary commitment to music, the presence of highly qualified music teachers, adherence to state and national standards, types of musical experiences offered, and opportunities for performance and competition. “Farmingdale teachers are very pleased to once again be awarded this distinction,” said Farmingdale School District Fine Arts Director Rita Zirpolo Padden. “Music teachers work diligently every year to

share their love of music with their students and to set ambitious musical goals. We see the results in music rooms, at performances every week and at the annual NYSSMA Majors adjudication; but it is very validating to have a national organization assess the district’s musical standards and award this honor.” More than 2,000 school districts participated in the 2016-2017 survey with 512 districts being awarded the “Best Communities in Music Education” by the NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit organization supported by the National Association of Music Merchants. “These districts make a strong commitment to music education in the core curriculum supporting its essential value to a well-rounded education for every child,” said Mary Luehrsen, NAMM Foundation executive director.
