Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably

warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.

Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell ﬂip-ﬂops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

Classic Cruise Nights Residents who are looking for a bit of nostalgia should come out for the return of Classic Car Cruise Nights, held on select Friday evenings during the months of July and August, at the LIRR Train Station parking lot on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. Beginning on Friday, July

10th, and continuing on July 24th, August 7th and August 21st, the classic car events are presented by the Town’s Department of Parks, Recreation Division and will display vintage automobiles in a fun and festive atmosphere. Anyone interested in vintage cars will be

impressed by the wide collection of classic automobiles featured at the event. Each Classic Car Cruise Night is a wonderful opportunity to see how the owners of vintage cars have maintained their prized possessions so well, and kept these vehicles in such perfect condition over the

years. Younger residents attending the Cruise Nights will get to see a part of American culture up close. Residents are invited to Classic Car Cruise Nights, free of charge. Those who have a vintage car, and wish to display must have a valid registration

Representatives of 511NY Rideshare, which provides free transportation and ride matching services, hosted a complimentary

lunch at Town Hall in Lindenhurst to thank those who successfully completed the challenge. Lacrosse Benefit The Town of Oyster Bay will again host the Shootout for Soldiers 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit slated to be held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, on Thursday, July 16th and Friday, July 17th. The round-the-clock event, which begins on the morning of July 16th at 9 a.m., will benefit American Military personnel. A special ceremony that celebrates the event and honors both veterans and those currently serving in the United States Military will be held at 6 p.m. on the 16th. Once again, ‘Shootout for Soldiers’ will be played on Long Island and we are extremely proud and pleased that one of our

outstanding Town fields has again been selected as the venue for this highly regarded event. Everyone who participates in this lacrosse event plays for the both the love of the game and to support those who serve our country. Shootout for Soldiers is a fun lacrosse event for players and teams of all ability levels and ages. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players with each group taking the field for one hour. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play. One of the highlighted games is a matchup between the NYPD and the FDNY, scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. In another

anticipated contest, teams of U.S. veterans will take the field in a game that will begin following the 6 p.m. ceremony. The event raises money for organizations that support those who served our Nation as well as those currently in the U.S. Armed Forces. The beneficiaries of this year’s event are the Wounded Warrior Project, the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and Team Red, White and Blue. At the 2014 event, more than $80,000 was raised in support of the United States Armed Forces. The event is broken down into 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. Registered players and teams will be given jerseys and placed on either the

Stars team or the Stripes team and matched against a team of similar ability. The score is cumulative resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. Last year, the outcome wasn’t decided until the last game was finished, with the Stars defeating the Stripes by a score of 214-210. The event is set to be a great experience for the players and supporters are sure to have fun rooting for the participants.Those in attendance will appreciate the opportunity to see these teams compete and also help support several important causes. It is a tremendous source of pride that these teams will compete at the Field of Dreams, which many feel is among the finest in

the Nation. Harry Jacobs, Chairman of the Shootout for Soldiers Committee, said this event has been a big success elsewhere and he is looking forward to bringing it to Long Island. He expressed his appreciation to all those who helped make it possible “I would like to give special thanks to all those involved in the planning of this event, especially the Town of Oyster Bay,” Jacobs said. “The contributions and support of the many talented and capable people helped make ‘Shootout for Soldiers’ a reality here on Long Island and will make this a great event that is a unique and fun way to support our troops.” Teams interested in participating can
