experience with childhood cancer. Ms. Vicere is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease Stage 3A and NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma Stage 1A at age 16. Ever since then she has worked to raise awareness about cancer, founding the Friends & Angels: The Tracy Vicere Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charity, as a way to help support families and children going through experiences similar to her own. Britt intends to donate the money to his teacher’s Friends & Angels foundation to assist the families of children receiving lifesaving treatment at Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York.

Remembering a Life The Farmingdale School District students recently come together to honor the life of beloved technology teacher and coach, Jim Anziano, who passed away unexpectedly at age 56. Jim, a class of 79’ alumni, was a dedicated and passionate teacher who positively influenced the lives of his students, his colleagues and the Farmingdale community. “Jim Anziano was a beloved and deeply valued member of the Farmingdale School District community,” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent John Lorentz. “Although the entire District mourns his loss, his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the countless students he inspired.” “Mr. Anziano was a
model teacher and an amazing role model who brought out the best in his students,” said Howitt Middle School Principal Luis Pena. “We will honor his memory by seeking to embody the integrity and passion which were so integral to his character.” Mr. Anziano graduated from Farmingdale High School in 1979. He had been teaching 6th grade technology at Howitt Middle School since 2008. He also served as the school’s girls softball coach, girls basketball coach, and the co-ed recreational basketball advisor. To celebrate his life and spirit, students have placed signs and posters around Howitt Middle School in his memory. “Jim was the type of person whose smile
could light up a room and his positive attitude could change your whole perspective,” said Howitt Middle School Math Teacher, Jacqui Merlo. “He was nothing but a ray of sunshine, a breath of fresh air.” “Jim was always smiling, always positive. I loved watching him interact with the kids - it seemed like he had a special relationship with each one of them. I think each one thought they were his favorite because of the way he treated them,” said Howitt Middle School Music Teacher Danielle Tucker. “If you didn’t really know him, just stop down his hallway and see the tribute that his students have paid him. You’ll get to know him quickly.”
Where It All Began Farmingdale High School seniors recently went back to where their academic careers began, visiting their elementary schools during the Farmingdale School District’s first-ever Senior Walk.
Graduating seniors were cheered on by students at each of the four schools while they retraced their steps through the elementary school hallways. The seniors shared tearful reunions with favorite teachers and
met with current students to encourage them to set goals and work hard in school. The seniors then shared their future plans post-graduation with the elementary school students and faculty members.

Summer Arts Classes
This summer Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), is featuring two Art Classes for children. Classes will be held at the Babylon Town Hall Annex Building, Room 15, 281 Phelps Lane in North Babylon. Mural Painting is a 5-week course for children 9 to 12 years of age. Each week students will learn to paint murals with subjects such as Marine, Ocean, Rainforests and Wild Safari. The Farmingdale School District recently kicked off its 16th Annual Matha-Thon for the students at Howitt Middle School. The District hosts this event every year as an innovative, exciting way to inspire students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. During the event, students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade compete to answer math questions
and raise money from sponsors. This year’s topearning class was Mrs. McCarthy’s 6th grade class; sixth grade students Jenna Reggio and Morgan Harris each raised more than $200 and Kevin McKeane raised $325. This year, Howitt Middle School students sent over $10,300 to help the cover the cost of the patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Students who donated $5 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital received vouchers from Applebees, Panera Bread and Chipotle as a thank you. In total, the students raised $2,200 in just one day. Over the past 16 years over $169,700 has been fundraised through Farmingdale School District’s Math-A-Thon program.

Celebrating Graduates The Farmingdale School District’s Farmingdale High School recently welcomed family, friends and the community to the Class of 2017 Graduation celebration. During the ceremony, valedictorian Samuel Croes, salutatorian Hamza Malick and class president Nicolena Spadalik inspired their fellow students to dream big CELEBRATING GRADUATES - Farmingdale High School students in the Class of and work hard to achieve their goals. Of Summer Memories and Staycations Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire
Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.
