Farmingdale High School senior Alayna Camisa—the enthusiastic Dale the Lion mascot for the past four years— received the Dr. James Tolle Unsung Heroine Award at the Todd Heimer Administrators/Secretarial Luncheon—held at the Westbury Manor on Friday, June 14th. The honor comes with a plaque and a check for a thousand dollars. This is the second year the award has been given. It goes to one young lady and one young man in Nassau County who have shown the commitment to participate in at least two varsity sports per year, work hard, have a positive influence on their teammates, and bring people together. They

must exemplify excellent sportsmanship, and show involvement in both community service and extra-curricular activities. Director of Athletics Jeanne Berkoski nominated Alayna for the award, and her application was supported by recommendations by Superintendent Paul Defendini, Assistant Superintendent Glen Zakian, FHS Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson, and Varsity Cheer Coach Rose Celentano. “It’s so heartwarming to know that my teachers, coaches, administrators, and directors in the Farmingdale School District took the time and consideration to write about my work

and achievements at Farmingdale High School,” said Alayna. “Receiving this award was extremely meaningful and emotional; this award shows me that I have completed my goal of having an impact on my home.” The award is named after Dr. James Tolle, a highly respected school administrator and educator who served four Nassau County school districts. He was a consistent and passionate promotor of the important role of interscholastic athletics in the total education of middle school and high school student-athletes in Nassau County.

Music Program Gets Gold The music program at Farmingdale High School has received a Gold designation from the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Their School Recognition Program is designed to recognize Long Island high school music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students

and that are incorporating the national and New York State standards for the arts in creative and meaningful ways. We are very excited to receive the Gold rating, which is the highest honor they bestow,” said Director of Fine Arts Rose Marvel. “This is a very prestigious honor.

weeks: Mondays beginning July 15th at Allen Park, Farmingdale – clinic for 5-6 year olds will take from 6pm-6:50pm, with the clinic for 7-8 year olds following at 7pm-7:50pm. Wednesdays beginning July 16th at Allen Park, Farmingdale – clinic for 5-6 year olds will take from 6pm-6:50pm, with the clinic for 7-8 year olds following at 7pm-7:50pm. Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and

he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization.
