Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

Volunteers are needed for the annual Good Shepherd Hospice/ Bob Sweeney Camp H.O.P.E., a two day bereavement camp for children who have lost a loved one and their surviving caregivers. The camp program, sponsored jointly by Catholic Health Services’ Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation, will be held on July 17th and 18th on the grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport. Children who have suffered the loss of an immediate family member are accompanied to the camp by a surviving parent or caregiver and all are offered the opportunity to identify, explore and share their grief experiences with other grieving families in a variety of activities. Camp H.O.P.E. is staffed by the professional bereavement staff of Good Shepherd Hospice, as well as volunteers from both hospice and the community. Additional volunteers, who will be specially trained by the Good Shepherd Hospice bereavement staff, are needed to support the families at this year’s camp. Each child in attendance is assigned a volunteer “pal” who will lend individualized guidance and support throughout the two day program. Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre recently joined with members of the Town’s Veterans’ Advisory Board and hosted a ceremony to honor local high school graduates who are going on to serve in the military. Thirty-one total students from the Town of Babylon will be joining the ranks of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory were also in attendance to commend the graduates. Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Augusto L. Tavernier, who currently resides in Brentwood, delivered remarks at the ceremony. CSM Tavernier served as a squad leader and cannon crewman for the 5th Battalion 5th Field Artillery, and served for 24 years as a Military Policeman. While serving our country, CSM Tavernier earned more than a dozen awards and decorations including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Ribbon. Councilwoman Gordon, a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves who was deployed four times, wished the young men and women the best and thanked them for answering the call to serve their country. Each of the graduates was presented with an official Town of Babylon proclamation in their honor. the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School is staffed with experienced and qualified

professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. The Plainedge Association of Girls Scouts and the Hardscrabble (Farmingdale) Association of Girls Scouts met on Tuesday, June 14th, Flag Day, to celebrate our flag and the life of Port Authority Police Captain Kathy Mazza. They met in the Mazza park in Farmingdale where they were greeted

by members of the Port Authority and New York Police Dept. and Mrs. Rose Mazza. The girls learned about Kathy, that she was the first female Police Captain in the Port Authority and was killed saving over 300 people when she shot out glass windows and doors in the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001.

They also learned about folding the flag and flag etiquette. The canine division came and did a presentation and the girls learned what is takes to be a female police officer. Each girl received a participation patch and made new friends in surrounding towns. Their community spirit showed no limits that day.

The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is currently offering registration for the Town’s Summer Hockey School program, developed by The Rinx Hockey School at the Town’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Hockey enthusiasts can sign up for any number of weekly sessions from one week to all eight weeks of the program. For 22 years, The Rinx has provided quality Hockey Camps and Clinics. We are pleased to offer the residents of the Town of Oyster Bay that same quality Hockey experience with all the FUN that comes from playing this great sport. The program will begin on June 27th through August 19th, will include a full day of on-ice and office training run by trained hockey professionals.

Throughout the week, participants will receive 15 to 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 to 8 hours of off-ice training. The program will be broken down into two levels, intermediate and advanced. The intermediate skills program is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. for ages 5 through 12. The intermediate program will include 15 hours of onice training per week and over 8 hours of training per week off the rink. The advanced session is from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is geared for travel players ages 6 through 14. The advanced session includes 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 hours of training per week off the ice. Both skill programs focus on shooting, passing, agility drills and field sports. There will be a recreational swim session and lunch is included every day.

The Summer Hockey School sessions will be challenging, but will result in newly developed skills for our young hockey players. Each class will be filled with useful tips and techniques to fully develop each student’s hockey playing abilities. The Rinx Summer Hockey School not only offers a fun way to spend the summer, but the perfect opportunity to fine tune hockey skills. Town of Oyster Bay residents receive a 10% discount on any of the training weeks. Early arrival and late pick up will also be available. SCIENCE BOWL CHAMPIONS - For the second consecutive year, the Farmingdale High School Science Bowl Team won the Brookhaven National Laboratory High School Science Bowl Regional Championship. The Science Bowl is a premier academic competition that is a jeopardy-like event for high school students who have strong academic abilities in mathematics and science. Teams consist of four students and one optional alternative team member. These very talented students and their Coach Mr. Peter Macchia were honored at the Nassau County Legislature by Legislator James D. Kennedy and Legislator Rose Marie Walker for their success.

Badminton & Volleyball

Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Adult Co-Ed Badminton and Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Programs. Both programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The badminton program begins on Sunday, July 10th and will be held on Thursdays and Sundays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Fridays from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The volleyball program starts on Monday, July 11th and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00

p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required. The Adult Co-Ed Badminton Program and the Adult Volleyball Program are great workouts within a competitive atmosphere. These programs provide an outlet of fun and healthy experience and are a great way to meet new people. Registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center,

Are You Man Enough to Be a Girl Scout? In honor of Father’s Day, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) are commending the fathers who make being a Girl Scout possible and invite other Dads to step up to the challenge. Our male Troop Leaders, council members, Cookie Dads and behindthe-scenes volunteers are crucial to the success of each Girl Scout experience. The organization creates openings for fathers to be a part of their daughter’s lives and strengthen their relationships with one another through participation in numerous activities. We encourage fathers to be involved and on this holiday, thank the unsung heroes who load the camping gear into the truck, build “bridges” for our bridging ceremonies and lend a hand when needed. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County considers itself lucky to know numerous fathers interested in volunteering their time to contribute to their daughter’s, and other

Girl Scout’s, experiences. These include Angelo Angelico and Jon Wang of Bellmore, NY; Jeff Strauber of East Meadow, NY; Wayne Goldenberg of Jericho, NY; and Clyde Riggins Jr. of Baldwin, NY; who are committed to further carrying the spirit of the Girl Scouts. When a group of hopeful Girl Scouts were in risk of being put on a waiting list to find a Troop Leader, Angelo and Jon stepped up to the plate as co-Leaders. “My involvement started when my wife asked if I wanted to enroll Ella in Daisy’s, and I said sure, what is a Daisy?” said Angelo. “When I attended the recruitment meeting I was told that due to an extensive waiting list in the area, Ella wouldn’t be placed in a Troop for about a year. Once I realized the opportunity in front of me I became a Troop Leader and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” “This experience has made me realize how precious the time I spend

with my daughters is. More importantly, my daughters know that they can count on me as both a parent and a leader,” said Jon. “I enjoy knowing all the skills I am able to teach my daughters through the Girl Scout program will serve them well as they grow up.” However, the ways in which Dads can contribute to the success of the Girl Scouts is not limited to becoming Troop Leaders. The seamless execution of the numerous events and activities would not be possible without the support of hundreds of men who volunteer throughout the year. Retired New York City Police Office Jeff Strauber utilizes his expertise to play a crucial role in event logistics, such as directing traffic at the recent GSNC “Go the Distance” Walkathon. “I enjoy working with the Girl Scouts and witnessing it help young girls build their self-esteem and develop problem solving skills,” said Strauber. “I appreciate that Girl Scouts

is a healthy outlet for girls to work on their self-image and eventually allows them to become wonderful young women. I always jump at the opportunity to be involved with anything that my girls are a part of; it is a rewarding experience to see how much Girl Scouts has positively influenced them, and it is great to see that they are all still involved in one way or another.” When GSNC Dads are not leading a Troop or volunteering at events, they are raising the world’s next greatest entrepreneurs by assisting with annual Girl Scout Cookies® sales. The GSNC is lucky to have fathers like Wayne Goldenberg who was more than willing to help his daughter succeed in selling over 650 Girl Scout Cookies™ for a good cause. Wayne’s daughter Alexia, along with her troop, was able to use funds collected from the sales to donate three “Buddy Benches,” which serve as common meeting places

for kids to make friends on the playground. “It was very inspiring to watch Alexia work towards her goal of selling enough cookies to purchase and donate ‘Buddy Benches’ to the three Jericho School District elementary schools, “ shared Wayne. “She was highly motivated. I enjoyed supporting my daughter and offering her guidance. Then after someone on the ‘Massapequa Moms’ group on Facebook challenged me to wear a Thin Mint Cookie costume, I did not hesitate. Alexia was able to boost sales by an additional 150 boxes and we personally delivered the cookies together, me in full costume.” The GSNC has the opportunity to watch Girl Scouts grow and develop from a Daisy to an Ambassador alongside their parents. Clyde Riggins Jr. of Baldwin reflects on the memories he has shared with his daughter, now 18 years old, over the last 13 years

she has been involved in the GSNC. As a supportive father, he has continuously volunteered his time to help with activities, and is known in his office as the “go-to-guy” during Girl Scout Cookie™ Season. “I have always been willing to offer any type of support, whether it has been helping prepare for meetings, transporting girls to activities or helping with cookie sales,” shares Clyde. “I have enjoyed watching my daughter grow and exhibit the confidence she has gained from her journey as a Girl Scout. I’ve witnessed her take risks and lead events and discussions with younger girls.
