Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will offer a youth tennis program at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale throughout the summer, beginning on Monday, July 15th. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Just as the Eagle Scouts commit their time to bettering and helping others, so too should we commit to them. By allowing Scouts to be recognized for their achievements and selfless service wherever they go, we honor Scouts like George for all the hard work they do for our communities, our state and our nation.

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,
strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer
questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment.
