Farmingdale is included in the “10 Beautiful Places to Discover in Nassau County, Long Island,” from Untapped New York, Noah Sheidlower. In 1687, Thomas Powell was the first European settler in the area, and after negotiating with Native American Tribes including the Marsapeque, Matinecoc, and Secatogue, he completed the Bethpage Purchase, which includes all of Farmingdale. The name Bethpage was cleverly named by Powell as it was situated between

Jericho and Jerusalem (not Wantagh), just like the biblical town of Bethpage in Israel. The Bethpage Friends Meeting House was built in 1741 and fostered a Quaker community in Farmingdale. About 100 years later, land developer Ambrose George opened up a general store in anticipating the construction of the Long Island Railroad, and the railroad station would later take on the name Farmingdale as well. Bethpage State Park, which includes part of Farmingdale, was opened in 1932 as an 18-hole golf course originally designed by Devereux Emmet. Surprisingly, Farmingdale also became a major location in the airline industry with the opening of Republic Aviation Company”. “Farmingdale Station is currently

listed on the NRHP, as it originally opened in 1841 and has remained a crucial part of the village’s identity, especially as many spectators stopped there when Bethpage State Park hosted the 2002 and 2009 US Open golf tournaments”. “Farmingdale features an exciting line-up of restaurants along its quaint Main Street, including the well-known The Rolling Spring Roll, which serves a selection of Vietnamese classics. Italian favorites range from the popular Vespa Italian Kitchen & Bar to Absolutely Mario while American options include Harleys, Whiskey Down Diner, and Library Cafe. Also popular along Main Street are CaraCara Mexican Grill, That Meetball Place, and Tiny Thai”.

Farmingdale School Budget Passes Farmingdale residents have voted to approve the Farmingdale School District’s 2020-2021 budget. The budget is a 1.16 percent spending increase over the current year and comes with a 1.95 percent tax levy increase. The $173,076,607

budget passed 4591-2873. Also passed were Proposition 2 (authorization to expend $5,000,000 from the Building and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund for bathroom renovations at various schools) and Proposition 3

(authorization to expend $350,000 from the Building and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund for energy performance contract improvements). The Farmingdale Youth Council Budget for the fiscal year 2020-2021 was also approved.

In addition, residents re-elected Ralph Vincent Morales and Arlene Soete, who ran unopposed, to the Farmingdale Board of Education for a three-year term. “Farmingdale is a fantastic community and we’re so pleased that

residents voted in favor of this budget,” said Assistant to the Superintendent for Business Michael Motisi. “We have a challenging year ahead of us and this budget will help us provide the educational resources every child in our district needs and deserves.”

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting. She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.” Mary D. from Massapequa, a long-time client of Eileens also has only good things to share; “I live with a crippling disability and getting out is a challenge for me, especially in inclement weather. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. The event proved to be a great success while having its attendees cheering on the jockeys and their horses remotely. Just over $25,000 was raised through this unique virtual event. Pal-O-Mine CEO and founder Lisa Gatti stated, “A special thank you to all who sponsored, watched, rode

and cheered on the jockeys and outriders at our first Pal-O-Mine Stakes. National Grid Warns Customers Of Latest Payment Phone Scam Imposters call customers, demand immediate payment, threaten to shut off service

National Grid is warning customers to beware of a new phone scam where imposters are demanding immediate bill payment and threatening service disconnection. This latest scam, which is targeting customers already facing hardships due to COVID-19, involves callers who pretend to be National Grid representatives. They tell customers that unless payment is made within 30 minutes, their power will be shut off. The customer is then directed to call “the direct billing department to make a payment and avoid power disconnection.” The scammers use sophisticated phone systems that display National Grid on the customer’s caller ID. Additionally, the phone number customers are instructed to call closely resembles the company’s recorded messaging and phone prompt directions.
