The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop-University Hospital held its Ninth Annual Black and White Ball at Oheka Castle on April 30th, an exquisite evening that raised more than $300,000 to benefit the CCFK’s essential psychosocial programs. Golf Outing Raises Funds

Supporters of South Nassau Communities Hospital raised a record gross total of $329,000 toward the expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department at its 31st Annual Golf Outing, held Monday on two courses, breaking all previous fundraising records for this event by more than 16 percent. John D. Cameron, Jr., P.E., founder and managing partner of Cameron Engineering & Associates in Woodbury, NY, was the honoree of the outing, which was held at both the Inwood Country Club and The Seawane Club on Monday, June 15th. Scattered Summer Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Seven prominent leaders in the Long Island automotive industry convened at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech recently to hold a panel discussion and answer student questions. Approximately 90 students from Barry Tech’s Automotive Technology, Automotive Skills and Automotive Collision programs attended “Automotive Destination Success,” an open forum where students learned from the experts. The panel - including local shop and dealership owners, fleet managers, service and parts directors, and automotive technicians - spoke on a variety of topics, such as how to get a job in the industry, what they, as employers, are looking for on an interview and in an employee, and the importance of a first impression. Panelists

offered valuable tips on proper workplace protocol, advising students to arrive on time, be respectful, take initiative, listen and ask questions, and to continue to grow and learn. After the panel discussion, the floor was opened for an extensive Q&A session, during which students asked pertinent, insightful questions. Following the event, the experts met with the students to learn a little more about them individually. One Town, One Book For the past few years, ‘One Town, One Book,’ the well-established, national program that seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families has been a summertime fixture in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year, Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia excitedly announces that in the coming summer months, participants will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. “For the past few summers, the Town has sponsored One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “In only a few short years, the program has flourished and helped some to forge an enduring relationship with literature that may not have been there before. I am excited to have it return this summer and offer all residents the chance to actively participate.” The Councilwoman noted that this year’s celebration, which invites residents of all ages to

read tales based on the general topic of Alice in Wonderland, will include a poster and essay contest for interested participants, as well as a screening of the Disney classic. “This year, to further encourage the creativity of our residents, Oyster Bay Reads will once again feature an essay and poster contest through local libraries,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Anyone interested in participating is invited to create a poster based on their favorite scene from an ‘Alice’ related work. Posters may be submitted to your local library. Essays, which should highlight the writer’s favorite part of their ‘Alice’ selection, can be sent to my office at ralesia@oysterbay-ny.gov, or mailed to my attention at Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents of all ages are invited to participate in either contest. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to attend the awards presentation at the 26th Annual BACCA Juried Art Show, which was held at the Old Town Hall. The event was widely attended not only by the participating artists, but by the greater community of art enthusiasts as well. This particular art exhibition involved a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, portraits, mixed media, drawing, watercolors, and pastels. All of the pieces were elegantly displayed throughout the Old Town

Hall, providing a first rate viewing experience. Additionally, many of the artists and BACCA board members were on hand to answer questions and provide insightful interpretive guidance. “Babylon Village and the surrounding communities are truly chock-full of talented individuals,” said McCaffrey. “We are so lucky to live in a community that fully embraces everything that truly defines its people. It made perfect sense to hold this show in one of the most noteworthy historic buildings in the area, as these artists are building upon our local

history right before our eyes. Brittney Walsh Memorial Scholarship Presented

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. Not long after Brittney’s passing, a fund was set up by a family friend to help with costs. This community-donated money was not used for that, but made into a scholarship fund to help those scholars who share characteristics similar to Brittney. The criteria for the scholarships is simple: 1. The scholar is looking

to attend college. 2. The scholar must complete a 250 word essay on “The funniest thing they ever did” or “The funniest thing they have ever seen” 3. Two must participate in high school sports, one from Women’s Track, and one from Women’s Soccer. 4. The third scholarship is offered to a male or female who completes the writing component only. “These students were able to show that they have what it takes to be a high school athlete, but also have a softer side and write about something funny. We also shared a smile. Smiling is one of the most enjoyable and contagious things, and they don’t

come as often anymore, but these helped,” said Brittney’s dad, Tom, at the Senior Awards Ceremony in June. The Brittney Walsh Scholarship Fund has awarded close to $10,000 in the past three years. He was named the “Person of the Year” for 2001 by Time magazine and was given an honorary knighthood by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 in recognition of his ability to bring not only New York City together during a time of unspeakable sorrow and terror, but also many people around the world. 2002, Mr. Giuliani founded a security consulting business, Giuliani Partners LLC, and in 2005 joined the law firm now known as Bracewell & Giuliani LLP. “Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek?

I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay. I empty all the closets in an attempt to make it neat, But then I get real tired and I need to take a seat. All the dust has made me stuffy, and so I find it hard to work. I’ve decided it’s my family’s fault as I slowly go berserk.

They have to clean this with me; after all, they live here too. They say that they will help me, and they swear to me it’s true. They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!
