The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Farmingdale Student Honored For Outstanding Achievement Ethan Sushko of the Farmingdale UFSD, who attends Nassau BOCES Willet Avenue Middle School, earned the prestigious George Farber Outstanding Student Award this year. The award celebrates a variety of Ethan’s remarkable attributes including passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship and a willingness to help others. Ethan was honored during an individual award ceremony this spring, featuring a special presentation of his award plaque by administrators and Nassau BOCES Board members. He was further honored with a personalized lawn sign and a $100 check from the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. Ethan’s challenges have necessitated he make several

transitions within the past year, from the Children’s Readiness Center (where he graduated), to the Rosemary Kennedy School, and eventually to the Willet Avenue School. As he began to settle in at Willet, Covid-19 struck, altering the face of education for all students. Throughout it all, Ethan has continued to make positive choices and develop vital coping strategies. He is a kind, caring, respectful young man who brings joy to all who know him and serves as a role model to his fellow students. “Ethan exemplifies the very best of Nassau BOCES,” said District Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon. “He embodies the true spirit of George Farber. He has shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic and

demonstrated outstanding commitment. He has eagerly shared his knowledge and made contributions to his community. Ethan’s story is an inspiration to us all.” For the past 14 years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009. WALL OF FAME INDUCTEES - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently attended the Farmingdale High School Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony held at Farmingdale High School. The Farmingdale High School Wall of Fame ceremony honors alumni who have gone on to achieve extraordinary success in their profession. Supervisor Saladino presented citations to the new inductees in recognition of their accomplishments. This year’s induction ceremony featured 6 honorees, 3 from the Hall of Fame Class of 2020 (whose ceremony was cancelled due to COVID pandemic) and 3 from the Hall of Fame Class of 2021. Supervisor Saladino commended Russ Catanzaro (Class of ’70), Dr. Christine Lathuras (Class of ’80), Christa Lucarelli (Class of ’87), Dr. Maria Elayne DeSimone (Class of ’72), Tracy Vicere (Class of ’91), and Glenn Weiss (Class of ’79), who unfortunately was not present for the event.

Excellence in Student Performance And scene! The Broadway Education Alliance has announced the 2020-2021 roster of students nominated for the 11th annual Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance. Despite disruptions to in-school learning, 27 high schools throughout greater New York participated in this year’s program by submitting students for consideration of awards and educational scholarships. Farmingdale High School entered five students into the running this year: Hailey Batista, Tyler Hothersall, Aidan Kelly, Rebecca Kenjesky, and Gabriella Sferlazza. The young actors were nominated by teacher and director Jessica Mischke

for their work earlier this year in the Farmingdale High School Playcrafters production of Beauty and the Beast. Gabriella Sferlazza (Belle) and Aidan Kelly (Beast) lead the cast, with Tyler Hothersall (Gaston), Hailey Batista (Lumiere), and Rebecca Kenjesky (Mrs. Potts) rounding the cast out. “All five of my nominated students moved onto the next round, which is unheard of,” said director Jessica Mischke. “They had coaching sessions with professionals, and based on that, the judges selected three to join the top six male and top six female finalists in New York State.” Gabriella Sferlazza, Aidan Kelly, and Rebecca

Kenjesky all advanced to the final stage of the Roger Rees competition, where judges recognized Aidan Kelly as the 2021 Roger Rees Up and Coming Actor. The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance is the only student award in the New York metropolitan area that recognizes distinction in student performance and outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre programs. The program is funded through donations from industry professionals, foundations, licensing companies, and other individuals or companies committed to supporting performing arts programs in area schools.

Farmingdale’s Athletic Department is proud to announce that, in addition to multiple victories and awards won by our fall teams, they have also achieved ScholarAthlete Team status. This recognition is reserved for teams in which 75 percent or more of the athletes have maintained a 90 percent or higher gradepoint average throughout their sports season. The hard work, focus, and dedication evident on these sports teams translate to the hours our studentathletes spend poring over their studies each day. To be a part of an incredible roster of sports teams is, in and of itself, no easy feat; to be equally as dedicated and successful in your academics makes the attainment of ScholarAthlete Status all the more impressive. The fall sports season looked very different this year, taking place in March and April. Teams had new protocols and much colder temperatures to deal with than usual. Girls varsity soccer had to submit to weekly Covid testing Saturday mornings and daily temperature checks upon arrival. “We won a grueling playoff in double overtime at Plainview before bowing out to the eventual county champions in the semifinals,” said coach Ilan Gornstein. “The team owes its successful season to their great leaders and captains: senior Jaden Keener and junior Emma Best.” Farmingdale Varsity Football was fortunate enough to play five out of their six scheduled games. Covid protocols affected the locker room and how they took the bus trips to away games. The team was fortunate to survive it all without any severe team

consequences. “The highlight of the season was just the chance to play football,” said Football coach Buddy Krumenacker. “The work ethic and dedication to living within these guidelines is truly a credit to our entire Farmingdale community.” The Dalerettes Farmingdale High School Kickline team thrived. All of their hard work and dedication paid off each time that they stepped out on the field. Despite the odds, the Dalerttes still were able to have a fantastic halftime show with the band. Each member of the team contributed their fair share of positivity. Even with all of the protocols, they managed to accomplish all of their team goals. Captains Cassie Fox, Rachel Goldberg, Zoë Leung, Hayley Boyle, and Erin Magrane put in so many outside hours to choreograph all of the routines. “Through their fun, organized leadership and communication skills, they shaped the Dalerettes team into nothing but greatness,” said Dalerettes coach Jess Baker. “Our captains took our team to a level that will be hard to top for the upcoming seasons.” The varsity boys volleyball team advanced to the second round of the playoffs this year. There were some challenges along the way getting through the season, but the student-athletes always stepped up. Covid quarantines caused some game cancelations, but getting back in the gym to compete again was the best feeling. Matt Teplansky received All-County, and Matt Pantorno received All-Conference accolades at the culmination of the season. “I will always be so grateful to all of the seniors for bringing back some normalcy to the school day and year,” said Volleyball

The team was led by eight graduating seniors, with Brianna Callahan, Kaley Chan, and Amanda Oppedisano, having played all four years on the varsity team. “This year was particularly a challenge playing in 30 and 40-degree weather,” said Tennis coach George Golden. “We take pride that three girls were awarded All-Conference and eight girls achieved

All-Division status. Once again, the team achieved the scholar-athlete award. Truly a year to remember in many ways.” The golf season was included with the other low-risk sports in relation to Covid protocols, creating a safe environment for student-athletes to play with their teammates and compete against other schools. As with golf, it was much easier to keep players safe and socially distant. Varsity golf finished the season in a tie for third in Conference IV. Captain Megan Broscritto had a competitive season and will take her golf acumen to college, where she will be participating on the Adelphi University

Women’s Golf Team. Freshmen Annalise Callahan qualified for the county tournament, which will took place on May 2627, 2021. The Lady Dalers swim team finished seventh overall at the Nassau County Championships, three spots higher than last year and their highest finish since 2012. Ten girls earned All-Conference honors, and dive champion Lauren Mehta was named to the All-County team and Co-MVP of the county meet. The Medley Relay of Lauren Mehta, Brooke Andros, Shannon Kelleher, and Malika Sodhi earned all-conference honors. Samantha Commike

finished twentieth in the 200 Free. Senior Taylor Spucces was ninth in the 50 Free, and sophomore Bella Cimino was fourteenth. Spucces earned All-Conference honors with a fourteenth place finish in the 100 Free, with Cimino close behind in seventeenth. The 200 Free Relay of Cimino, Sodhi, Kelleher, and Spucces was sixth overall and All-Conference. Mehta finished fifteenth in the 100 Back in AllConference position, and Commike, Spucces, Cimino, and juniors Jessica Giordano and Lauren Danulevith were All-Conference in the 400 Free Relay, finishing in twelfth place.

New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one

year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500

donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting

vaccinated each day, we are thrilled to watch our state recover from this catastrophic year,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “As New York bounces back in strides this spring, we need everyone to make an appointment and donate blood to help save lives. While the
