The Farmingdale School District’s Woodward Parkway Elementary School recently traveled to the Farmingdale Adult Day Care to help entertain senior citizens in celebration of Memorial Day. More than 40

Planned Spontaneity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

Choral groups from Farmingdale School District’s Farmingdale High School (FHS) recently competed in the prestigious Music in the Parks competition at Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the event, the FHSwas awarded the coveted Esprit de Corps award, which is presented each year to students who demonstrate proper social etiquette and encourage others throughout the festival.

In addition, the women’s chorus, under the direction of Jessica Mischke, was awarded first place in the women’s chorus category, and the mixed chorus, under the direction of Claire Zatorski, was awarded first place in the mixed chorus category. Individually, Farmingdale High School tenor Evan Torres was presented with the outstanding vocalist award for his solo during a performance of the song “Daniel, Daniel, Servant of

the Lord.” Participating in the annual event is part of the Farmingdale School District’s ongoing commitment to providing a platform for students on which to excel both in out of the classroom. This June, members of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Gold Award, a prestigious honor and the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The Gold Award represents developing leaders by inspiring girls to execute a project they feel passionate about in their local community to make the world a better place. The GSNC will award 101 local young women with the honor, an accomplishment which reflects leadership and citizenship skills that set them apart. “Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is an extremely notable achievement, and we are so delighted to announce this year we have over a hundred

local young women who will receive this honor,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director/CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “On average, five percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award, so this is an incredible success for us and the awardees. We are so proud of all the girls who have grown as leaders, increased their civic engagement, and community services through their projects.” Over the course of the past 100 years, approximately 1 million Girl Scout alumnae have developed Gold Award projects that address local or global issues – among them green energy and genderbalanced leadership. These projects have positively

impacted girls’ lives, their communities, and the world. To be eligible, girls must complete two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journeys or have earned the Silver Award and complete one Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journey. Each journey gives girls the skills needed to plan and implement their Take Action project. Once the Scout is eligible, they then can identify an issue, investigate it, create a plan, present the plan and take action to address the root cause of an issue, and work to make a sustainable impact, before achieving their Gold Award. “Just like my fellow Girl Scout sisters, my journey through scouts was unique, filled with an array

of different experiences, but the one thing I share with all of them, is the experience of earning my Gold Award,” said Kaitlyn Genari, who received her Gold Award in June 2014. “There truly was no feeling like completing my Gold Award. I felt a sense of pride and belonging as I was able to connect with others and make a difference in my community. Being able to pioneer my own take action project allowed me to showcase my abilities as a planner, leader and action taker.” According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, Gold Award recipients display more positive life outcomes pertaining to sense of self, life, satisfaction, leadership, life success, community

service, and civic engagement. For Kaitlyn’s Girl Scout Gold Award Take Action Project she set out to make crossing Hempstead Turnpike safer while educating students on pedestrian safety. Kaitlyn petitioned the local town in order to increase the amount of time at pedestrian walk signals at intersections along Hempstead Turnpike. She also created pamphlets and gave presentations on pedestrian and transportation safety. Her project resulted in an increase of pedestrian walk signals along major roads and busy intersections. “Embarking on the journey to my Gold Award helped shape me into a young woman of courage, confidence and

character,” added Genari. “The skills that I have learned in earning my Gold Award are skills that I have taken beyond my project. They are skills and qualities I use in my studies at school, the clubs and organizations I am involved in, my current jobs and I plan to take everything I have learned on the rest of my life’s journey. Being a recipient of the Gold Award was an experience that I will never forget, but my journey as Girl Scout hasn’t ended.
