Barcoding DNA Tenth-grade research students in Linda Waldbaum’s class at Plainedge High School participated in DNA Barcoding at Cold Spring Harbor Lab. Students wrote a research proposal, collected aquatic invertebrate samples, isolated the DNA from more than 40 samples

and then had the samples sequenced. The team of eight students analyzed their sequence data to gauge the biodiversity in two areas of the Massapequa preserve. The eight students are: Adam Ayroso, Liam Byrne, Michael Stabile, Nicholas Stabile, Julissa Rivera, Minas Sarmas, Daniella

Vetrano and Meghan Zedalis. Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Father’s day is time to remember and celebrate our Fathers. Fathers and fathering figures are an integral part of the family. Despite being a pivotal part fostering our children, far too many families grow up without a father figure. Father’s being absent from the home are the result of many issues ranging from incarceration, abandonment, abuse, deportation, selfishness, as well as other reasons to many to name. These issues are a societal problem, which will continue to be talked about and resolved by policies but also through education on the importance of the fathering role. While we wait for Fathers to be a larger part of family life, it is important to celebrate the role of the Father and those father figures in our life. For those who cannot celebrate their fathers for various reasons they still have one Father to celebrate; a Father who has never and will never abandon them. This Father is God. God has known us, Jeremiah chapter 1, verse 5 of the ESV says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you”. God our Father is a part of our lives knowingly or not, and regardless of whether we accept it or not. He will always be there for us even when we distance ourselves, curse his name, reject his love, and dismiss his precepts. He is there because a true father never abandons his children. God the Father serves as the role model for all fathers. Father’s day is a day to celebrate our earthly fathers AND our heavenly Father. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Edward L. Nightingale IV graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included

training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Nightingale earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Jayne and Edward Nightingale of Massapequa Park. The airman is a 2013 graduate of Massapequa High School, Massapequa. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2017 from Farmingdale State College, Farmingdale.
