SCHOOLS PARTICIPATE IN VICTORY GAMES - Forty-three students from Farmingdale School District participated in the Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged Victory Games. The all-day event was held at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale. It was a fun day of track and field events, races, and big smiles! The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!
New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for
After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Their owner Mike runs various programs for the community such as Pregnant Drives, Field Trips, Volunteer Opportunities, Gardening Classes and Bee-Keeping Classes! Their Work For Food program is also another way the community can become involved with the farm. This program allows people to volunteer their time and contribute as few or as many hours as desired, in replace for a bundle of fresh organic food! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

The Farmingdale School District has launched a new initiative called Dalers Read! It’s designed to provide middle school and high school students with a collection of curated book titles, peer and faculty reviews, and resources to motivate summer reading. The website address is: dalersread. farmingdaleschools.org It highlights top summer reads—broken down
by grade level —along with a rotating selection of student and faculty reviews. There is also a page dedicated to Farmingdale’s favorite authors, including several who have visited the district to meet with students. Parents are also encouraged to use the website as a resource for tips on how to keep their children mentally engaged over the summer. The Dalers Read!
initiative includes a collaboration between the Farmingdale School District and the Farmingdale Public Library, created to help students and their families understand and navigate all the free resources and fun events that the public library provides. The district will also participate in the library’s Summer Reading Club Carnival on Thursday, June 27, 2019.
Beginning at 5:30pm, there will be games, crafts, giveaways, character meet and greets, face painting, food trucks, and music— all geared around the love of reading! A1C NICHOLAS TAMAYO GRADUATES - U.S. Air Force National Guard Airman 1st Class Nicholas E. Tamayo graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Tamayo is the son of Bobby E. Tamayo of Farmingdale, N.Y., Raquel Felipe of Bronx, N.Y., and Norma I. Galarza of Bronx, N.Y., and brother of Robert J. Tamayo of Reading, Pa. Secures Grant For Fire Company Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D-Wheatley Heights) recently presented the East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Company with a $125,000 New York State capital grant that she was able to secure from the Fiscal Year 2018-19 Budget.
The funds from this grant will allow the department to purchase filter systems that will remove and reduce carcinogens from vehicle exhaust in the firehouse. “Our volunteer firefighters are the bedrock of our communities, and their safety and well-being
should always be our top priority,” said Jean-Pierre. “I’m so happy that this grant will be used for new exhaust systems so that the air that our firefighters breathe in is cleaner and safer.”
