I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a ﬂourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to ﬂip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your inﬂuence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

Members of the Brian Moore Memorial Fund Inc., the not-for-profit established in the wake of the untimely death of Officer Brian Moore last May, issued its first round of scholarships this week to students of Moore’s alma mater, Plainedge High School. Students were selected based on their demonstration of extensive academic credentials as well as extracurricular and volunteer experience. This year’s recipients are Nicholas Ticali and Alexa LaScala. They were acknowledged for a number of key skills that the committee felt make

them ambassadors for the Plainedge community. In addition to maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA and plans to attend a four-year college, students applying for the scholarship were required to obtain the endorsement of their guidance counselor. Applicants were also asked to submit an essay describing how volunteer or community service has shaped who they are today and what community service has taught them, as well describing any challenges or obstacles they may have had to overcome in their lives and how those achievements will help

them succeed in college and beyond. Scholarships will be paid directly to the school the student will attend. Earlier this year, the Brian Moore Memorial Fund Board of Directors reached out to local community members, inviting them to alert worthy graduating students to submit applications for consideration of this year’s scholarship. The goal of the fund is to provide scholarships to qualifying and deserving Plainedge High School graduates, as well as provide financial assistance to Police Officers, Firefighters or Military personnel in need.

Outstanding Achievement Charles Stoll of the Farmingdale UFSD was honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. He earned the award for his talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Charles received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Charles Stoll, a student at Nassau BOCES Willet Avenue Middle School, has been steadfast in his struggle to overcome a variety of challenges. With the support of his family and Willet Avenue staff, Charles works diligently every day to improve his academic performance and to master daily living skills. He is very involved at Willet Avenue, participating in student government, lending his voice to the chorus, and volunteering to make deliveries for the school’s breakfast café each morning. For three years running, Charles has earned the highest level in the school-wide Power of Choice Program — the rank of Golden Eagle. He is known for his exemplary character and serves as a role model to younger students. In his home district of Farmingdale, Charles is a member of the Farmingdale Community Football League and the Nassau County Police Department’s youth

volunteer program. He volunteers with the community swim program, where he teaches younger children how to be safe in, on and around water. He is a member of the Farmingdale High School SMILE program, where he works with his general education peers on different social activities, and has spoken at a meeting of Farmingdale

Special Education Teacher Elena Perdikos. “He works hard every day to achieve the goals that have been set for him and that he has set for himself. Charles believes that all people should be friends. He always sees the best in everyone around him and can light up a room with his smile.” Outstanding students have been earning this prestigious award since 2007. It currently stands as a memorial to former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was only surpassed by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” District Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon said at the awards ceremony. “Each of them embodies the true spirit of George Farber.
