FARMINGDALE SALUTATORIAN - Farmingdale High School recently announced the Salutatorian for the 2016-2017 academic year. Hamza Malick achieved the second-highest Grade Point Average (GPA) of the 2017 graduating class with a weighted average of 104.02. Malick is a MathCON national finalist, a Science Bowl captain, and member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mathletes and Science Olympiad. Main Street, in the Village of Farmingdale, has many fine restaurants and shops and several times a year is the location for street fairs, parades and summer music festivals. With this in mind, the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) Community Improvement Committee, headed by Chair Helen Norjen and Co-Chair Ellen Pence, decided that adding a place to sit and enjoy everything the community has to offer would enhance the local environment. For several years, monies raised from fundraising programs was put aside to purchase a beautiful wrought iron park bench located on the east side of Main Street between Conklin Street and the Farmingdale Fire House. When Mayor Ekstrand and the Board of Trustees approved this venture, they also voted to match the donation and so Main Street now has two beautiful park benches facing each other and forming a cozy niche. In April, under the

direction of Ways & Means Ingrid Hernandez and CoChair Valerie Thieke, the WCF held a Fashion Show fundraiser at Bethpage Country Club. Models worked the “cat walk” showcasing fashions from Chico’s Tanger Outlet in Deer Park. “Super Model” members included Ann Ciuffo, Rosemary Emigholz, Lynda Leone, Cheryl Parisi and Lorraine Stanton. At the April General Federation of Women’s Clubs, NYS (GFWCNYS) Convention, WCF President Tina Diamond was very proud to accept over a dozen awards for her club, including awards for Public Issues & Community Service: Republic Airport Issues, card writing and costs for Adopt-A-Battalion, sewing labels/quilts/veterans; Educational Programs for Outreach: Back to School Backpacks; Special Project for Mother’s Day: purses/toiletries/Madonna Heights; Women’s History & Resource Center: Farmingdale Library

High School senior Joseph Schmidt was also awarded a $500 scholarship to attend college. The scholarship is open to all seniors who have completed at least three credits in business education and plan on attending college next year majoring in business or business education. Business teacher Jonas Viik was also awarded the Teacher of the Year award for 2017. Each year LIBTA recognizes an outstanding member who has positively influenced Business Education. Criteria may include such factors as interest and enthusiasm for the education of students, improving and expanding the Business Education program and active business involvement at the local, state or national levels.

On Friday, July 21st, for the 10th consecutive year, thousands will ride through the streets of Babylon alongside proud veterans to support wounded service members. Last year, the event raised over $60,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project and United Veterans Beacon House, with over 1,000 riders participating alongside more than 50 wounded service members. Since the first Soldier Ride in 2008, over $750,000 has been collected for injured service members. The Town of Babylon is proud to announce that 50% of the funds raised at this year’s Soldier Ride will go directly to Suffolk County United Veterans (SCUV), a project of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “For the tenth consecutive year, the Town of Babylon will salute those who gave so much for our great nation with the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride,” said Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in

the United States Army Reserves who organizes the Town’s ride and served proudly overseas four times, including in Iraq in both 1990 and 2003 as well as in Afghanistan in 2012. “It is an honor to ride alongside the brave men and women of our Armed Forces once again, and the participation from hundreds of people coming together for such a great cause makes the experience that much more special.” This year’s ride starts at 9 a.m. with a ceremony at Babylon Town Hall and then leads participants through a 25 mile course filled with Town of Babylon landmarks, including Old Town Hall, Robert Moses Bridge, and Overlook Beach, where the riders will be greeted with refreshments and a barbecue for the ride’s closing celebration. reduced to $25 and $20, respectively, during the Early Registration period which ends on June 16th. Cardboard Arcade

Farmingdale School District students at Albany Avenue Elementary School recently explored their classmates’ paper creations during the school’s

Cardboard Arcade. For the past several weeks, fifth grade students have been using their Friday Genius Hours to imagine, design, engineer

and create functional arcade-style games using only paper and cardboard. More than 100 students in grades 1-4 experienced the interactive exhibit by playing with the more than 30 games on display and learning about the endless possibilities that exist within the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. In addition, the fifth grade students also gave presentations to explain their games, and the younger student audience gave real-time feedback on their work. This event is part of a Farmingdale School District ongoing initiative to help inspire students to think outside the box and develop a love of STEM.

I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Promoting Public Speaking The library recently came to life as Farmingdale School District first grade students at Albany Avenue Elementary School shared their love of reading by dressing up as their favorite literary characters and putting on spirited

performances for their parents, classmates and teachers. Students wore homemade wigs and costumes and performed skits to explain the plot of some of their favorite stories.
