I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of
decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know
is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this non-profit. They truly believe mental health is as important as physical health. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. This 54-week pilot training program begins with a six-week preflight phase of academics and physical training to prepare students for flight. The second phase, primary training, is conducted in the single-engine,
turboprop T-6A Texan II. Primary training takes approximately 23 weeks and includes 254 hours of ground instruction, 27 hours in the flight simulator and 89 hours in the T-6A aircraft. After primary training,

Training for the fighter track is done in the T-38C Talon, a tandem-seat, twin-engine supersonic jet. The airlift-tanker track uses the T-1A Jayhawk, the military version of a multi-place Beech Jet 400 business jet. Both tracks are approximately 26 weeks and are designed to best train pilots for successful transition to their followon aircraft and missions. Unruh is the son of Matthew and Kevin Unruh of Massapequa Park, and Roseanne Unruh of West Islip. He is a 2012 graduate of Massapequa High School, Massapequa Park, N.Y. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2015 from Suny Farmingdale, Farmingdale.

Getting Into Character Character Day was held at Albany Avenue Elementary School this past May, with first-graders picking out their favorite character from a beloved book and bringing them to life in the classroom. Now an annual event,
its purpose is to illustrate the reading strides that students achieve during the school year. Creatively dressed in the costume of their character - before an audience of family members children read aloud a few short
paragraphs about why they chose their particular book and character. Among the favorites this year was Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dinosaurs Before Dark, and Nibbles the Book Monster.

Daler Ducks Hatch
The third-grade at Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School welcomed four Daler Ducks into the world this spring! Beast, Lucky, Crackers and Fluffy. The idea to nurture fertilized duck eggs in the classroom was hatched by teachers Angela Gross, Kathleen Sokolowski, Phyliss Falco, Elizabeth DellaRocca, and Kathy
McDonald to complement the third-grade embryonic development curriculum. The eggs - from Makinajian Poultry Farm and County Store in Huntington arrived at Saltzman in April to complete their 28-day cycle. Students were shown how to candle the eggs so they could see blood vessels developing inside the shell. “This was the first time
we ever did this so we were all nervous mothers,” said Mrs. Gross. “We were here all hours making sure the humidity was up and we played the sound of peeping on our phones to motivate the chicks to hatch.” Every classroom in the school had a live feed on their smartboards and parents were able to watch from home. “The first duck broke out of its shell during school hours and you could hear a roar throughout the building when it hatched,” said Mrs. Gross with a big grin. The children were visibly upset when it came time to return the young ducks to the farm. “We did a final duck walk with the 3rd and 5th grade,” recounted Mrs. Gross. “The ducks had imprinted on me so I was able to lead them down the path into the kiddie pool that we used as a duck bath. Everyone was cheering.”
When Farmingdale School District’s Instructional Coach for Digital Learning, Bonnie McClelland, was introduced to Flipgrid - a video discussion platform for students - she, well… flipped! She immediately saw its potential to grow student engagement and promptly reached out to its creators to develop new ways to use it at the district. The “grid” of Flipgrid is a classroom or community (established by individual teachers with privacy settings) created to ignite discussion and collaboration among classmates. Students share their voices by making videos that they post in the
grid. They are taught that everyone’s voice must be respected. Ms. McClelland’s innovative ways of using the platform at Woodward Parkway Elementary School caught the attention of Flipgrid’s Minneapolis-based staff, and when they set out on their first-ever Student Voice Bus Tour they chose Woodward Parkway as their last official stop. The visit - which took place during Teacher Appreciation Week included a fun-filled assembly in front of a packed audience of ecstatic elementary school children. The experience gave students a chance to ask questions and share
ideas about what they would like to see on the platform in the future. “It’s a classroom tool that truly engages the students and amplifies their learning through open discussion,” explains Ms. McClelland. “We’re moving away from the model of the teacher in the front of the class. This tool teaches social learning with conversations after the fact.” It can also be especially helpful for those children too shy to speak up during class. To the delight of all students, the Flipgrid staff presented Ms. McClelland with two Voice Pods for children to use as roving recording studios to create future video messages.
