Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate

goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

Learn To Skate

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this summer by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. The ice skating center offers skating classes for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities all throughout the year. Registration for Series 6 (July 6th through August 23rd) will begin on June 13th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is seven weeks and all classes

are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and

skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School staff is comprised of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. The team of professionals places a major focus on educating the fundamentals of ice skating while also having fun. The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. The individual winners will be announced in June at their respective high school’s scholarship award ceremonies. Each participating high school’s guidance department selected one graduating senior of its choice based on a minimum four-year average of 90%, as well as service to his or her community and school. Student Elected As Ofﬁcers Three students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech were elected as National Officers during the State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse last month. These three students will represent New York State at the National Leadership and Skills Conference in

Louisville, KY this June. Jack Shea, a Barry Tech plumbing student from the Lynbrook UFSD, was elected Area VI Vice President; Michenka Juin, a Barry Tech nurse assisting student form the Baldwin UFSD, was named State Historian; and Leeann Turrisi, a Barry Tech veterinary science

student from the East Meadow UFSD, will serve as a National Delegate for New York State. As National Officers, these three students will attend a number of training sessions that will prepare them to serve as members of the National Officer Team at the June conference. Following

the nationals, Jack Shea and Michenka Juin will have additional training opportunities including summer sessions and attendance at the September Washington Leadership Conference. The national competition is the culmination of a series of events that SkillsUSA
