And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them ﬂying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their ﬂight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

New Recycling Program The Town of Oyster Bay will begin hosting a weekly cardboard recycling drop-off program at three convenient Town locations. Under this new program, spearheaded and organized by Town

Councilmembers Rebecca M. Alesia and Anthony D. Macagnone, residents will be able to drop off unwanted cardboard to be recycled on Saturday mornings, beginning June 4th.

“This new program will not only generate less solid waste for the Town, but recycling cardboard also reduces the demand for new paper, thereby saving trees and decreasing the amount

Cinco Celebration Students in Mrs. Caracappa’s class visited the locally-renowned Mexican restaurant, Cara Cara on Main Street, where they learned how to make guacamole and discussed misconceptions about Cinco de Mayo. The lesson also included details about Mexico’s historical

struggles with Spain, Britain, Portugal and France. The Cinco de Mayo celebration and educational activity was part of the District’s ongoing effort broaden students’ horizons and to expose them to many different cultures.

CINCO CELEBRATION - Seventh grade Spanish students in Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School stand outside local restaurant Cara Cara on Main Street. Students recently celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a fun history lesson and lunch at Cara Cara, learning how to make guacamole and discussing Mexican history and Mexican contributions to American history, food and art.

Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School recently celebrated Cinco de Mayo by offering a fun lunch-lesson to its seventh grade science classes, focusing on Mexican history, food and art, as well as the many contributions Mexico has made to American culture.

Some 190 golfers teed off to benefit the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation during the 19th annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament, held on May 16th, at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury. The event, which has been sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings Bank for the past 19 years, raised $265,000 for the hospital’s neurosciences and honored Kevin J. Mullins, MD, FAANS, FACS, Chief of Neurosurgery and Director of Neurosurgical Services. Dr. Mullins is a board certified neurosurgeon and founder of Long Island Neurosurgical & Pain Specialists. Henry Schreiber, Vice Chair of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board and an inaugural member of the golf committee, said, “I think it’s one of the best outings that we’ve had. It appeared that Dr. Mullins was a very substantial draw and we are very grateful to him. It was a great opportunity for those attending to enjoy an excellent course and we have had some very good comments from the golfers. Adding tennis was also very rewarding and everyone seemed to have a great day.
