By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need.

viewed on the Farmingdale School District’s Facebook page. A gigantic version of the poster is presently hanging on the outside wall of Farmingdale High School for all to admire. Farmingdale BOE Adopts 2020-2021 School Budget

On Tuesday, May 19, 2020, the Farmingdale Board of Education adopted the 2020-2021 Farmingdale School District budget. The budget, adopted virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, calls for a spending plan totaling $173,076,607—an increase of $1,992,807 (1.16%) from last year’s budget—and a tax levy of 1.95%. “The ongoing pandemic and the uncertainty of state aid made this budget a particularly challenging and timesensitive undertaking,” said Assistant to the Superintendent for Business Michael Motisi. “Through continued conservative fiscal management, we generated a 2020-21 spending plan that maintains programs and services to students, parents, and the community at a reasonable cost. We focused on the health, safety, and

operational needs of the district, and removed any non-essential projects.” On the ballot this year are two propositions that allow the district to reallocate existing resources without any additional cost to the taxpayer. Proposition 2 asks for authorization to expend $5,000,000 from the Building and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund in order to pay the cost of district wide bathroom renovations. Proposition 3 asks for authorization to expend $350,000 from the Building and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund to pay the cost of construction management services in connection with energy performance contract improvements that will allow the district to install solar carports. As per the executive order issued by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, voting on the

budget, along with the school board and library trustee elections, will take place on June 9, 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. There will be no voting at the polls; all votes must be cast by absentee ballot only. Ballots will be mailed to all district registered voters beginning May 28, 2020, along with a postagepaid return envelope. The absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk, Mary Rogers, no later than 5 p.m. on June 9, 2020. Ballots will be accepted by USPS mail, and in a designated ballot lock box— to be located at the east entrance of Howitt Middle School along Van Cott Avenue— on June 8 and June 9 only, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. All ballots will be counted by hand and the date to announce results has not been established yet.
