the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

The Book Fairies During the month of May, Student Council members at Eastplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District hosted a book and e-reader drive to benefit Book Fairies.

The Book Fairies is a nonprofit organization that collects reading material for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. Student Council members created and hung signs throughout the

Library media specialists from school districts across the county agree that Nassau BOCES plays a key role in providing the tools their students need to compete academically, both locally and globally. Award Contest. Liam is being recognized in the community category and Ashley has been honored in the overall category. The students are invited to attend the prestigious award ceremony on May 4th at Uniondale Library where they will receive

their citations honoring this accomplishment. The senator encouraged students to participate in contest which honors promising young students who have demonstrated real leadership in their communities.

The Farmingdale School District recently celebrated the accomplishments of two Farmingdale High School students and one Howitt Middle School student who were invited to participate in MathCON, a nation-wide mathematics competition held in Chicago. The students were selected among 573 students from across the United States who were selected to compete, representing the top one percent of close to 50,000 students who participated nationwide.

The Farmingdale students selected were senior Hamza Malick, junior Aidan Piranino and seventh grader Amanda Treulich. Four additional Farmingdale students received an honorable mention for their performance, including Farmingdale High School juniors Andrew Divittorio and Brittany Pham, as well as seniors Samuel Croes and Trevor Clark, MathCON is an online math competition for students in grades five through twelve with grade-

level specific timed tests of 45 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. MathCON’s goal is to engage students in STEM outside of the classroom and encourage more students to enter the STEM fields, which are currently some of the fastestgrowing industries in the United States. Students from all types of schools, including home-schools students, can take the test at their own schools under the supervision of their own teachers.

Farmingdale School District students recently got their hands dirty studying botany in a creative, innovative science class at Northside

Elementary School. This event was part of the District’s ongoing initiative to inspire students to develop a love of science, technology, engineering

and mathematics (STEM) concepts by incorporating hands-on projects into the curriculum. During the lesson, students painted ﬂowerpots, learned about plant growth cycles, and explored advanced concepts in ecology and botany. After filling their pots with soil, students carefully planted seeds at the right depth and watered them with the optimal amount of water to ensure growth. Students will continue to monitor their plants, making scientific observations about their plants’ growth and developing an understanding of the natural world.
