CONNECTING STUDENTS AND SENIORS - Always looking to make a connection with those outside of their school, the fourth grade members of the Cares Club at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District spent the afternoon of May 15 gardening with the senior residents at St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Walking from their school across to the center, students were ready with their shovels and smiles as they worked side by side in the outdoor patio garden of the center alongside the seniors. Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore.

If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). Farmingdale School District held its annual District Art Show on May 14, 2019 at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School. Open to the public, it featured artwork from all six schools in a variety of mediums, including: oil, sculpture, mixed media, drawing, watercolor, fashion, and photography. The show has become a very popular event and is attended by hundreds of students, parents, and residents. As in prior years, the evening was

split into two sessions to give everyone the time and space they needed to fully admire all the fabulous pieces of art. “This was an outstanding event, displaying diverse and exquisite art work from across the district!” said Director of Fine Arts Rose Marvel. Congratulations to the fabulous art staff and children in the district who continue to strive to be the best!” The purpose of the show is to recognize and honor students with talent

in the arts. Each school receives a finite amount of display space, and each piece is carefully and considerately chosen by art teachers. It’s a wonderful opportunity for parents to see the evolution of their children’s artistry from the elementary to the high school level. Attendees were encouraged to “share the love” by leaving positive messages of encouragement for the artists in small boxes, labeled by school.

Massapequa, NY – Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that the Town, in partnership with local boy scout Troops 601 (Massapequa) and 261(Farmingdale), recently planted 60 trees at Anchor Park in Massapequa to help support wildlife and improve water quality for residents. The Saladino administration was awarded these trees through a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Supervisor Saladino stated, “These new trees will help stop pollutantcarrying storm water runoff from going directly into the Seaford Creek

during severe storms. I thank the Boy Scouts and volunteers who joined us in planting these new trees in Anchor Park.” Anchor Park is located adjacent to Seaford Creek, which is susceptible to storm water runoff during significant weather events. The new trees will help reduce the effects of potential ﬂooding and serve as buffers against pollutants and sediments. Other benefits of the tree planting include providing a habitat of food and protection for birds and other animals, as well as providing shade, comfort, and improved aesthetics for park visitors. No existing trees will be damaged or removed as part of the new tree planting initiative.

It’s Never Too Late To Achieve A Healthy Weight (NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits. “Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?”

NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention. Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year. The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for

physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours

a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six

through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond.
