“Hope,” a multipanelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,

for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

Pool Registration Open Registration for the Town’s pools will begin on Saturday, May 24th, Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Chris Coschignano has announced. All Town pools will open for the season on Saturday, June 28th. “Enjoying all of the Town’s pools is just one of the many fun activities available to Town residents this summer,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Look out for our summer guide, which will be arriving in your mail boxes in the coming weeks, detailing all the great programs the Town will be hosting this summer.” The Town of Oyster Bay has four community park pools open to Town of Oyster Bay residents, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post, PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, as well as Tappen Pool in Glenwood Landing. Beginning on May 24th,

registration will take place daily and will be held from noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at the community park pools and from noon until 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, registration will take place from noon until 7 p.m. at all facilities. Beginning on June 28th at Tappen Pool and at the Community Park Pools, registration will be held during hours of operation. Town residents interested in registering must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number required. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Town pools will be open daily from June 28th through Labor Day, Monday, September 1st. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have

and still resonates in the Plainedge community. “I’m so proud to have Edward Byrne as an alum of the district,” Dr. Salina said. “He was a man of deep convictions who gave his life protecting others and fighting the war on drugs. This beautiful memorial arch serves as a constant reminder to the Plainedge community of Edward’s sacrifice in making the world a better place.” The original arch was erected in 1988 following his death.
