Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19. CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication
Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Initial data available from studies using COVID-19 convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or life-threatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a benefit for some patients, leading to improvement. People who recover from COVID-19 do so, in part, because their blood contains antibodies that are able to fight the virus. Prior research of other viruses found that treating patients with plasma obtained from those who have recovered from the same virus leads to rapid improvement. The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that

led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the virus. “Catholic Health Services is excited to be on the front lines and participate in these clinical trials for COVID-19,” said CHS Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, MS. “Our clinical teams have spent several weeks caring for COVID-19 patients. It means a great deal to everyone to take part in these two cuttingedge research efforts.” Potential plasma donors must have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptomfree and fully recovered. Using South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper as a form of advertising has been a positive experience. It is the one local paper that is a staple here on the South Shore. I grew up with the South Bay in Lindenhurst and looked forward to receiving it when living in Massapequa and now in Massapequa Park. People stop me and comment how they see me in all the papers and honestly, theirs is the only one I advertise in, so I’m getting the exposure I wanted! Through this difficult time, it has been comforting to reach out to my account representative and have him respond so quickly, whether I am placing my own ad or an ad with other Signature Associates I work with and admire. I think it foolish not to buy print ads in the South Bay’s Neighbor, which is read by so many. Thank you for publishing this local paper. - Katherine C. of Signature Premier Properties
My attitude of gratitude starts with a huge thank you and profound/authentic appreciation for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper. This paper really helped put my salon business “on the map” by increasing my client base. I also wound up being contacted by Senator Brooks’ office in regards to being nominated for the Empire State Award, which I then won, after they learned about all that I do for the community while reading the South Bay. I absolutely love this paper and I’m forever grateful what they have done for me. - Eileen S. of Scanlon’s Traveling Salon
We have been advertising our homeowner’s homes in South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper since 1995. Over the years, we have successfully worked together with several account representatives, thus combining our talents to create advertising copy & photo. We value our long-lasting relationship with South Bay’s Neighbor especially during these challenging Covid-19 times & we urge everyone to continue to support their neighborhood businesses. There are lessons to be learned during this pandemic if we really listen & hopefully as a society we‘ll emerge stronger, wiser, smarter, more compassionate & empathetic. - The Michele & Mark Goodman Team (516-655-6613) of Douglas Elliman Real Estate The Michele & Mark Goodman Team
I have been working with my account representative for the past couple of years to promote my company in the South Bay Neighbor Newspaper and he has always been so helpful and fast to get back to us with any issues that may arise. I am looking forward to continuing our business relationship for many years to come! He and his team are a pleasure to work with. - Benny D. of Exit Realty Premiere

8 Alarm Fire At Tronic Plating Company
FARMINGDALE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MAY 27, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
On Friday, May 15, at approximately 5:30 pm, a fire broke out at the Tronic Plating Company located at 37 Potter Street in Farmingdale. The Farmingdale Village Fire Department and surrounding fire departments, volunteers and emergency workers, responded. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and a second had heat exhaustion. The fire caused the roof to collapse
and due to the unknown chemicals at the site the Nassau County Haz-Mat team was called in and was at the scene. The fire was under control by 8 pm and its cause is under investigation. “We thank the Village Fire Department, East and South Farmingdale, Massapequa, N. Massapequa, Bethpage, Syosset, Hicksville, N. Amityville, Westbury, and all others that assisted.
The volunteer fire and emergency responders are heroic, and truly appreciated for their dedication and service”, said Farmingdale Village Mayor, Ralph Ekstrand, who was at the scene. “The coordination of fighting the fire with all these other departments from the command post set-up and run by Chief Michael DiBartolo is truly amazing,” added Mayor Ekstrand.

Long Island Elite Members Raise Funds and Deliver Over $10,000 in Needed PPE Supplies
Long Island Elite (LIE), a dynamic unique business mentoring and philanthropic organization headquartered in Farmingdale, recently announced that it has established the “LIE COVID-19 HealthCare Workers Relief Fund” and its membership contributed $10,000 to commence the fund. The money is designated to source and purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other associated items that are considered critical by their member organizations in the HealthCare sector. The fund recently went live and has already garnered support from LIE’s extensive business network. Text “LIEPPE” to 44-321 to access the homepage where you can donate and view the progress made towards their $30,000 goal. The first tranche of $10,000 was used to purchase sanitizer from Long Island Spirits in Baiting Hollow. The craft distillery uses local Long Island sourced ingredients and has converted its operations from producing award winning vodka, gin, liqueurs, and whiskey to manufacturing medical grade hand sanitizer
almost overnight. “Long Island is our community. It is where our families and businesses are”, said Michael Stern, President of Long Island Elite. “Healthcare workers are on the frontlines, caring for our friends, neighbors and families during this crisis. LIE is committed to helping them stay safe and continue to do their heroic work.” The first batch of sanitizer was hand delivered by officers of the Board of Directors on Tuesday April 14th. Vice President Ian Murphy was responsible for sourcing and vetting vendors to ensure the funds were being used wisely. “The fact that we were able to find a local Long Island business producing a critical product at a fair price made it possible for us to get and put even more supplies into the hands of the people who need them,” remarked Murphy while unloading his truck at one of the hospitals. “It also eliminated delivery time and got product literally into the hands of people in the hospital in mere days.” The order was split between Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip and Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside. Tim
Matejka, Long Island Elite member and Executive Director of Development at Mount. Sinai South Nassau commented that “the product delivered will probably stock the hospital under these circumstances for a month”. At Good Samaritan, Justin Jaycon, Assistant Vice President of Public Affairs and also a Long Island Elite member said “knowing the hospital is adequately supplied with PPE eases the minds of the already stressed workers throughout the hospital system.” The LIE COVID -19 HealthCare Workers Relief Fund will remain open throughout this crisis and additional supplies will be purchased and delivered as needed. About Long Island Elite (LIE): Long Island Elite’s mission is to cultivate the development, growth and leadership capabilities of young business professionals across Long Island. The non-profit organization is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for local notfor-profit organizations and other agencies that make a difference in our own backyard. Women’s Club Allocates Donation To St. Joseph Hospital
FARMINGDALE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MAY 27, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
On Wednesday, May 20, The Women’s Club of Farmingdale presented administrators, including Barbara Gibbons and Elizabeth Schwind of St. Joseph’s Hospital, with a check for $2,750. This donation is earmarked for PPE materials and/or any other equipment needed by hospital staff to combat Covid-19. We thank the healthcare workers who have been placed on the frontline of this pandemic, continuing to go to work every shift in order to protect the people we love most. Heroes ALL! Club meetings in April and May were cancelled to comply with social distancing mandates and sheltering at home requirements. However, business continued electronically and the following agendas were approved: • New slate of officers for
the 2020-2022 club years. We congratulate and thank the upcoming WCF Board: o Tina Diamond, President o Lynda Leone, 1st Vice President o Vicky Impollonia, 2nd Vice President o Edie Allen, Recording Secretary o Judith Vasquez, Corresponding Secretary o Cathy Sewell, Treasurer o Ann Lomonte, Auditor • The 2019-2020 Philanthropic Budget, which includes donations to St. Kilian’s Outreach, Speak Up for the Poor, United Methodist Church Soup Kitchen, St. Thomas Episcopal Church Soup Kitchen and Farmingdale Adult Day Care, was approved unanimously in May, instead of June, to make the St. Joseph’s donation more timely. (Speak Up for the Poor sponsors girls in poverty in Bangladesch to
stay in school and away from sex trafficking offenders. The club raised $1,122 and the Philanthropic Budget added another $250 bringing the total donation to $1,372. This donation will make it possible to add a beautiful Learning Center wing and supply two bicycles for the girls to use as transportation). Congratulations to member Linda Kreussling who was elected President of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs - New York State (GFWC-NYS). And kudos as well to WCF Co-President Cheryl Parisi for being nominated by Sen. Thomas’ District as one of several “Women of Distinction 2020.” In June, the club will grant monetary awards to deserving Farmingdale High School seniors who meet the requisite qualifications totaling over $3,000.

Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting I-Pad Donation Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff. We are looking for about one
hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate the community’s
response. We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital. Please keep them coming! In order to maintain social distancing and safety, appointments are being scheduled for donation drop off. Please contact: Joan Dickinson, Stony Brook University Community Relations Director, at COVID19donations@ stonybrook.edu or call 631.219.0603 to schedule an appointment.

Home Garden Make Your Garden Count For Butterflies (NAPSI)—In this season of social distancing, many Americans are turning to gardening, finding joy and peace in an outdoor activity that can be safely enjoyed from home. “What all gardeners know, and the rest of you may discover, is that if you have even the smallest space, a pot on a window ledge, a front step, a wee yard, there is no balm to the soul greater than planting seeds,” recently wrote Charlotte Mendelsen for The New Yorker. If you haven’t gotten your hands a little dirty yet, now could be the time.

to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Please visit www.guardiansofrescue.org/donate or www.pawsofwar.org/donate-today to give today. No amount is too small! Paws of War is also looking for volunteers with construction experience to assist in building catterys and dog houses for animals in need. #READY2GOSAFELY - The Long Island Contruction Industry has been busy during the quarantine. They hammered away at helping, hospitals, first responders and the community. Then they came together, people from all the Long Island construction associations and various groups, to share information and work on gathering supplies and methods for a safe roll out. They want to continue that work with “sky banner”. A message down the center of LI and up the south shore beaches to symbolize unity and the importance of safe business practices as we get back to work. The respectful message is Gvnr. CuomoLI Construction #ready2goSafely. We want to keep the theme of responsibility going for our industry, said one anonymous industry member involved in the campaign.
Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to
hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow
social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including
3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. Grilling Safety Video from the NFPA
About FASNY Founded in 1872, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) represents the interests of the approximately 90,000 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel in New York State. For more information, visit www. fasny.com.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
