Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What
does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies
frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

Superintendent Passes The Farmingdale School District is sad to announce that Dr. William A. Kinzler, a former superintendent of the District, recently passed away at the age of 95. During his 28-year tenure with the District, Dr. Kinzler served as
a classroom teacher, guidance counselor, school principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent of schools. “Dr. Kinzler’s legacy will never be forgotten,” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent
John Lorentz. “He helped generations of Farmingdale students learn, grow and thrive. He was loved, and will be missed, by the thousands of people whose lives he impacted.” Born in Ridgewood, Queens, Dr. William
A. Kinzler received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from St. John’s University. He was also a veteran of the United States Navy, serving the country during World War II. Dr. Kinzler joined
the Farmingdale Public School administration in 1956, serving as the superintendent from 1965 until his retirement in 1976. Under his leadership, Farmingdale Public Schools built on its reputation as a center
for academic excellence, a reputation which continues to this day. The District sends its sincerest condolences to Dr. Kinzler’s family.
