At the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) May 4th meeting, 1st VP and Program Chairman, Cheryl Parisi, introduced her daughter, Heather Parisi, who presented a wonderful program on the Pearl of Hope Nursery & Primary School she founded in Lela Obara, Northern Uganda, Africa. It was while Heather was on vacation to see the silver-back gorillas that she became captivated with the land and the people. Over dinner, and a chance encounter with a couple from a nearby hospital, a spark was ignited and fueled as Heather fell in love with the children and people of Uganda. Through much hard work and many obstacles, working hand-in-hand with the local people and communities, Heather founded the “Pearl of Hope Nursery & Primary School” which strives to give children the tools needed to lead a full and healthy life. The school teaches the basics of math, science and geography, has a Pen Pal program, sponsors a student scholar program and teaches a Fitness Program called Fitness for Africa. The school also has an Adult Literacy Program, as well as a Garden & Feeding Program, which teaches the nutritional value of various foods. Through friendships made abroad and the core values of fitness, nutrition, health and wellness, the program assures that this understanding will be carried
forward from generation to generation. One the many women helped by Pearl of Hope is “Grace,” a single mother of 9 children and suffering from HIV. She is now receiving proper medication; she is part of the Pen Pal Program; she’s learned basic math and writing skills and is a board member for Fitness for
Africa. The school hopes to move to a new location soon with a new brick structure. Anyone wishing to donate can go to: www.fitnessforafrica.org. In addition to the Pearl of Hope School, Heather has helped bring organized fitness instruction to schools
throughout Uganda. She is the founder and CEO of Flip2Bfit and Fitness for Africa which has developed the first and only fitness board game. Using the Flip2BFit and Bakari platforms as the core instructional tool to introduce the students to fitness, the program opens minds to healthy lifestyles in combination with physical movement and the enjoyment of physical fitness. With Flip2Bfit, the concepts of yoga, cardio, stretching and strength activities are shared with the children, educating them on the importance of a strong body and a strong mind. Playing the games develops self-esteem, confidence and leadership skills in combination with improving their command of the English language. This non-profit program has provided educational sponsorships to orphans and vulnerable students in Uganda since 2011. The sponsorships provide students with an education, scholastic materials, a school uniform, sporting clothes and a daily meal at school for a full year, as well as offering counseling sessions for the families. For being such an excellent role model for students of the Farmingdale School District, and to acknowledge her many accomplishments, the FSD inducted Heather to the 2017 Wall of Fame on Monday, April 24th, 2017.

Howitt Middle School to attend a showcase featuring the best examples of artwork students created in their art classes during the ART SHOWCASE - Student-created artwork on display at Howitt Middle School 2016-2017 academic year. Covanta Winners Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently announced the winners of the 2017 Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarships at the Town’s annual Earth Day Celebration, where 11th grader Brittany Faustin of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School was awarded the top prize of $1,000 in scholarship money. Brittany’s project examined the effectiveness of the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles on the growth of Aspergillus niger, commonly known as black mold. She was commended by Deputy Supervisor Martinez, as well as other elected officials and representatives including Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, and Town Special Assistant Terence McSweeney. In addition, Deputy Supervisor Martinez presented a Special Recognition Award to Renee Locker, Science Department Chair at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, for overseeing the highest number of project submissions and highest percentage of winning projects. The Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarship contest is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta Energy, which operates the energy-from-waste facility in West Babylon. The program is designed to encourage students who are studying environmental science to explore areas related to renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, alternative building materials, or any other means to
mitigate climate change and environmental degradation. This is the 10th consecutive year that these scholarships have been awarded. The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Distinguished Teacher The Farmingdale School District proudly announced today that Farmingdale High School teacher Celia Blum has received her “Distinguished Teacher” award during the Harvard Club’s recent Distinguished Teacher Award Ceremony. Blum was recognized by the Harvard Club of Long Island as one of its 2017 Distinguished Teachers, a prestigious list of the most influential high school teachers throughout Long Island. She was one of only 12 teachers selected from hundreds of nominees throughout Long Island. This is the third time a Farmingdale School District teacher has won the award in the past six years. “Ms. Blum is a model of the integrity and excellence emblematic of the district’s educational caliber, and we are extraordinarily proud of her for this welldeserved recognition.” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent John Lorentz. “That three Farmingdale teachers have been selected for this prestigious and selective award in the past six years speaks to the District’s mission to provide Farmingdale students with a world class education that will stay with them throughout their lives.” Ms. Blum has participated in the Humanities program at Farmingdale High School for more than 15 years, after
working as a volunteer and part-time HIV/AIDS educator and activist. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fordham University in 1998, receiving the Katie Fraser Prize for Excellence in Comparative Literature. She has also coached the Odyssey of the Mind competitions and initiated the Farmingdale School District’s participation in the Long Island Ethics Bowl. Her 10th grade
2017 Distinguished Teachers list, Celia Blum joins fellow Farmingdale High School teachers Peter Macchia and Scott Drucker, who were named Distinguished Teachers in 2014 and 2012 respectively. Along with Blum, both Macchia and Drucker were acknowledged during the 2017 Distinguished Teacher Award Ceremony on April 30 for their inspirational dedication to student success throughout the District. Teachers are nominated by current Harvard University undergraduate students, who fill out applications to convey the influence a specific middle school or high school teacher has had on their academic success. The Harvard Club of Long Island then selects around 10 to be honored as distinguished teachers. “Ms. Blum is a valuable asset to our teaching staff and an inspiration to the many students whose lives she has touched throughout her storied career. Her students describe her classes as energetic and rigorous, and she is always available to any student seeking to reach the next level,” said Farmingdale High humanities courses are known to be challenging, yet fair, School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson. “Our teachers covering everything from literature to art, architecture, are the heart of our District’s success. More than 40 outstanding art students in the Farmingdale School District recently showcased their work during the recent 13th annual Nassau All-County Art Exhibition. The exhibition exclusively featured work from the most talented studentartists in the county. “We are very proud
of these students and their artistic success,” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent John Lorentz. “By offering a robust artistic curriculum the Farmingdale School District provides students with a wide variety of creative outlets and opportunities to excel artistically.”
The annual Nassau County Art Exhibition is sponsored by the Nassau County Art Supervisors Association which honored Kindergarten through twelfth grade students who have demonstrated excellence in a variety of two dimensional art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking,
computer graphics, and photography. Every artistic piece was produced in alignment with the New York State Standards for Visual Arts. During the exhibition Farmingdale High School student Geneva Ammonds received special recognition from Nassau County for her submission.
