“We are so grateful to George for creating this beautiful sensory garden for our students,” said Principal Klocek. “The garden was an idea brought forward by Mrs. Breuer, who shared the therapeutic benefits that these spaces provide for all students. To have a safe, calming environment like the one George created where students can relax and explore their senses is something that adds so much to our school.” Principal Patrick Klocek and Assistant Principal Jennifer DeHayes handed out drumsticks, chalk, and erasers so the children could fully interact with the features of the garden. “The design was geared toward special needs kids with sensory issues,” explained George. “It’s an outdoor learning environment. Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reflecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices flowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

They will match you with a senior based upon your location and interests. Volunteers are also needed for their Ombudservice Program. Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. The children took to it immediately and had fun drawing on the ﬂower chalkboards, banging on the pipes, and feeling all the textures on the tactical board. “Some of the stuff was easy to figure out, like making it green

Sherwin Williams donated the paint and American Plumbing Solutions donated the pipes. The garden was completed at no cost to the school. “It was amazing to see all the kids come out. They were so happy. It looks like everyone had a great

time,” said George. “If you give kids all different opportunities they’ll feel like they belong.” The purpose of an Eagle Scout Service Project is to teach leadership, something George began learning when he joined the boy scouts in first grade. Scouts must earn 21 badges to make Eagle Scout. George said that getting badges peaked his interest in many

things. One of those interests turned out to be criminal justice, which he will be studying this fall when he begins his college education at Pace University. Principal Klocek added, “I could not be prouder of the legacy that George has left Woodward Parkway and I look forward to seeing our students using this space for many years to come.”

It consists of photos and articles focusing on several projects commemorating and honoring Miss Leonard including a centennial birthday celebration in 2013 and the placing of an historical marker at her home in Farmingdale in 2017. This historical collection will be donated to the library and stored in its historical archives room. Nominations for the 2018-2020 WCF Board were presented to members and accepted. Carol Grima has been appointed Assistant Principal of the Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh. She will be responsible for the lower grades at the school where she will oversee student performance, assist the principal and support the curriculum. Ms. Grima started her

Franklin Square UFSD as a Special Education teacher for a self-contained class. After 10 years in the classroom she became the building and district level intern for the school. It was during this internship that she took on administrative roles. This experience allowed her to introduce new curriculum, pilot an interactive learning medium, develop a peer reading group and implement a district-wide parent workshop. “After 11 years it just became evident that I wanted to reach a larger population, says Grima of her decision to come to Nassau BOCES. Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment. By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise. If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you? Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive? Situation: Someone is driving and trying to cut into your lane with good reason. Some people (whatever their motive) will pull up closer to the car in front of them and not allow this. To add insult to injury, they will never make eye

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down. Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential beneﬁts of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation

studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can

help people combat stress for several hours afterward. Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may beneﬁt by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body. Stress is a part of daily life for many people. But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.

Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise. Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

Music can improve performance during a workout and may actually take your mind off of strenuous or repetitive activity. Tunes also can be coordinated to the workout. technology teacher Kyle Matura’s hometown firehouse needed training props - so he came up with an idea that would be a

win-win for everyone. With lumber supplied by the Miller Place Fire Department, Mr. Matura had his students design,

was thrilled that students stepped up to the challenge with great enthusiasm,” said Mr. Matura. Miller Place Fire Department Chief Matt Bruemmer was exceedingly grateful for the student’s hard work. “It’s a great thing for them and a great thing for us,” said Chief Bruemmer. “We spend a lot of time training and this is awesome.” Chief Bruemmer and engine company officers from the Miller Place Fire Department arrived at Farmingdale High School with a long ﬂat truck to take delivery of the props and transport them

home to their firehouse. Technology students Ryan Hunt and George Frontino - who built the props - were on hand to help them load and secure them on the truck. Mr. Matura added, “The Miller Place Fire Department will use these to train and improve on critical skills needed for firefighter survival. We hope neighboring departments will see the value of these training units and reach out to our Farmingdale technology students, who will be more than willing to apply their skills to construct additional sets.

The technology honor society students at Farmingdale High School needed a project to build, and Farmingdale

plan, and construct props - called mask confidence training units - that will enable trainers to simulate conditions that firemen often face in the field, such as going into a room with no ﬂoor or breaching a wall should a fire trap them inside. Summer Reading Challenge Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today issued a Summer Reading Challenge to elementary school children throughout the Town, encouraging them to spend some quality time with a good book this summer. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is challenging students to not only spend quality time with friends and family this summer, but also with some good books. Students who read during the summer perform better in their studies in the fall, and we challenge you to pick up some new books from your library

today!” An informational brochure about the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Reading Challenge is available, which contains: a list of reading suggestions for students from 1st through 6th grade; a summer calendar to help track your child’s reading progress; and a form to fill out and return to Town Hall along with the successful reading calendar once 40 days of reading has been completed. Councilwoman Johnson added, “As part of the Town’s Summer Reading Challenge, I encourage children to spend at least 15 minutes a day reading this summer during the

months of July and August. At the end of the summer, for those who complete 40 days of reading, he or she will even earn a Town Excellence in Reading Certificate. Beaches to Open Residents anxious to get their summer started a little early this year can visit certain Town of Oyster Bay beaches on weekends beginning Saturday, May 26th. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that TOBAY, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Beaches will open for business every weekend and on Memorial Day until beaches open daily on June 23rd. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The summer season is nearly upon us, and many residents are eagerly looking forward to Memorial Day weekend for the first opportunity to enjoy a sun-filled funday at our beaches. Our residents are invited to

come enjoy the start of the beach season and spend some time with your feet in the sand.” Beach stickers are on sale daily at TOBAY Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. To purchase a resident beach sticker for your vehicle, residents must present their vehicle registration and bring the vehicle they plan to drive to the beach since stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only Town residents may purchase beach stickers for Town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Councilman Hand added, “Beach lovers can get an early start on enjoying the magnificent

Town facilities during the weekend before they open full time for the summer. From Saturday, June 23rd, through Labor Day, all Town beaches will be open for the season seven days a week.” Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits. Residents aged 60+ qualify for a Senior Beach ID at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $32. Additionally, volunteer firefighters, U.S. Coast Guard members, Armed Forces service members, and veterans all qualify for seasonal beach passes at reduced rates. The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) is hosting its Judged Art Show from Wednesday, May 30th through Thursday, June 14th at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded in the following categories: Oils, Pastels, Portraits, Watercolors, Drawing, Mixed Media, Acrylics and in two Student Categories: Students A (Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8) and Students B (Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12). The show is open to all Long Island and Metro artists. A new category has been added this year, Adult Student. This category will provide adults who are currently taking art classes with an opportunity to show their work along with their peers. The judge for this show is Beth Giacummo. Beth Giacummo is an

artist, arts activist, curator and educator living and working in New York. Mrs. Giacummo holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA in New Forms from Pratt Institute. As an artist, she has exhibited her work both regionally and internationally in venues throughout New York, Romania, Russia, Spain, Italy, Chile and Denmark. Her public and large scale sculptures have been exhibited through the Patchogue Arts Council PAC MAC Festival (2014, 2015) Patchogue Arts on Terry Festival (2016) and National Endowment for the Arts grant for “Arts Engagement in American Communities” with Dowling College; Sculptural Interactions at Idle Hour (2015). Giacummos’ professional experiences range from arts education, higher

education, curriculum building, curatorial work, museum management, gallery management, exhibition direction, non-profit building, arts activism, fundraising and international program development for artists and students. Her background includes instruction, course writing, student advisement, mentoring during her time as a Full time Professor of Fine Arts / Design and Art Theory / Criticism for Briarcliffe College (2010-2014), Exhibition program and management as Chief Curator of the Briarcliffe College Gallery (20102014), All media studio Instruction as Assistant to the Director of The Center for Visuals Arts in Blue Point, NY (2000-2012), Visual Arts Consultant and Artist Residency Coordinator for the East End Arts Council (2010-

2011). In 2010, Giacummo was appointed Exhibition/ Curatorial Director and Senior Curator at the Islip Art Museum. Dedicated to the development of arts and culture on Long Island, Mrs. Giacummo has created a number of new programs and collaborative initiatives on behalf of the Islip Art Museum. In August of 2016, Mrs. Giacummo was appointed

to the position of part time Gallery Director for the Farmingdale State College Memorial Gallery. As of April 2017 Mrs. Giacummo is proud to return to the Patchogue Arts Council as their first Executive Director. She continues her own private art making practice in addition to selective teaching artist opportunities. Entries must be original
