Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 101 pints of blood at its April 24th drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. Originally slated for March 6th, the Town of Oyster Bay was asked to move their date by the New York Blood Center to accommodate other blood drives affected by the recent snow storms. Despite the move, the Town’s Blood drive exceeded its goals. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that each pint of blood, when broken down into component parts, could potentially help save three lives, 303 people will benefit from the donations made on April 24th. And that’s what giving blood is

all about…saving lives.” The Councilman went on to say that while blood donors are heroes in his book for keeping our area’s hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood, a successful blood drive takes the hard work of Town employees, who help with outreach and scheduling appointments. “My deep appreciation goes to both donors and those behind the scenes,” Councilman Muscarella said. The Councilman noted that anyone who missed the Town’s blood drive and would like to donate can call the New York Blood Center at 1.800.933.2566, or visit www.nybloodcenter.org. “You hear about blood shortages all the time, and you may wonder why there is always a sense of urgency,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that every two to three seconds, someone in the U.S needs blood, and that one in three

If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. For the nearly five million people who receive blood donations annually, your donation can make the difference between life and death.” The Councilman added that the Town’s summer blood drive is scheduled for Thursday, August 7th. The history of pretzels dates back to when a young monk was preparing unleavened bread for Lent, the Christian period of fasting and penitence before Easter. Christians of the day prayed with their arms folded across their chests, each hand on the opposite shoulder. It occurred to him that he could twist the leftover dough from the bread into this shape and use it as a treat for the children to recite their prayers. He named his creation “pretzels,” Latin for “little reward,” and the pretzel’s form became a symbol of Easter, prayer, good luck, long life and prosperity. Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

Grant Challenge Received The Gold Coast Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) organization that has been dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach on Long Island for over 20 years, has announced that their widely successful “ARTreach” program is in danger of being cut back due to budget constraints. If this happens, hundreds of Long Island and

New York students who currently benefit from the programming will be denied access to the services moving forward. With this fact in mind, the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation has issued a challenge grant: If the center can raise $30,000 by June 15, the foundation will match it. That means that every dollar they raise will be worth two dollars to their cause.

The Kaylies are philanthropists who are committed to education and other causes that create a strong community and Mr. Kaylie was very impressed with the work that the Gold Coast Arts Center has done over the last 20 years in the areas of arts and education. Walking For The Witness Project

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined The Witness Project of Long Island Saturday for their 11th Annual 5-Mile Walk from Wyandanch to Babylon Town Hall to raise breast cancer awareness. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer over a lifetime. The Witness Project is a community-based program sponsored by the National Institute of Health designed to ‘increase awareness, knowledge, and motivation, thereby increasing screening and early-detection behaviors among African American women and ultimately reducing mortality and morbidity from breast and cervical cancer among

underserved African American women.’ “I am proud to support the dedicated members of The Witness Project in the fight against breast cancer,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Their efforts truly help save lives.” The Witness Project of Long Island is one of several chapters nationwide committed to raising breast cancer awareness and increasing early detection to save lives. This year’s walk, chaired by Charvon Davis-Pierce, was dedicated to the late Linda Hart, founder of the Sisters of Greater Long Island. Linda’s husband, Warren Hart, cut the ribbon to kick off the walk. Linda Hart survived breast cancer for 19 years until she tragically succumbed to the disease

in 2013. Her courageous battle against breast cancer led to her involvement in an Oscar-nominated HBO documentary, “Mondays at Racine.” Racine is a salon in Islip where owners, sisters Rachel DeMolfetto and Cynthia Sansone, have been compassionately providing their services to Linda Hart and other breast cancer patients free of charge for several years following the loss of their own mother to breast cancer. The Witness Project provides comprehensive services, including community outreach, information and support. Last Chance For Taxpayers Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2013-2014 School taxes by the May 12th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard two percent late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after June 2nd cannot be accepted since the

collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Receiver Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay late taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property.” In July, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners

with taxes in arrears. Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 516.571.2090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit that office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that property taxpayers in Oyster Bay do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Scholars Recognized

Principal Gene Fennell recently announced the names of 11 seniors who received a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence. This program provides scholarship assistance to outstanding New York State high school graduates. Each year, 8,000 scholarships are awarded - up to 2,000 scholarships of $1,500 and 6,000 scholarships of

$500 to top scholars from registered New York State high schools. Awards are based on student grades in certain Regents exams and can be used towards tuition for four year of undergraduate studies in New York State. The Holy Trinity students receiving a $1,500 scholarship are: Maddalena Tondi of Merrick and Michael Dormer of Lynbrook. The following each received

Recreation Registration Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia announced that registration for the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2014 Summer Recreation Program is now underway. “Entering its 49th year, the Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program offers an exciting and affordable summer option for parents,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “Children between the ages of four and 12 are eligible to join this agegrouped program, which provides a safe, clean and stimulating atmosphere where they can enjoy themselves. Children are grouped into Early Childhood (4-6); Juniors (7-8); and Intermediates (9-10) and Seniors (1112). Depending upon the children’s ages, the program offers trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the 36th Annual Tobay Games.” “Families with children who participated in last year’s Summer Recreation Program will automatically

receive a registration packet for this year’s program,” Councilwoman Alesia continued. “All others may call the Recreation Division of the Town’s Department of Parks at 516.797.4125, and a registration packet will be sent to you that you can fill out and mail in.” It is important to note that registration is by mail only as walk-ins will not be accepted. Councilwoman Alesia noted that the fee for the Summer Recreation Program is $275 for one child, and $100 for each additional child within a family of more than two. The registration deadline is June 20th, 2014. The Summer Recreation Program will be held at Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park in Farmingdale, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, and Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. The

program begins Monday, July 7th, and runs through Friday, August 15th. There are both morning and afternoon sessions each day and children may attend both. However, no supervision is provided between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Parents must make arrangements for their children during this time. “The Town’s Summer Recreation Program is an excellent opportunity for children to participate in wholesome activities right in their own communities,” Councilwoman Alesia commented. “Both parents and kids love the program. Students from Farmingdale High School and the Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School drecently created an anticyberbullying awareness program to teach their peers about internet safety and the vices of bullying.

The students were inspired by a previous cyberbullying presentation made by Nassau County Police Officer Sharon Galvin. The student groups created informational posters, flyers and messages to teach their
