Town Beaches To Open Continued From 4 beaches during the weekend before they open full time for the summer. Beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents at the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will get a reduced rate of $30. Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so
much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Farmingdale Student Honored
Angela Eugenio was honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. She earned the award for her talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Angela received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Angela Eugenio, a Farmingdale UFSD student attending Nassau BOCES CCA, has worked extremely hard over the years to overcome the obstacles on her path to success. She has made significant strides both academically and emotionally. Angela is a gifted young woman with talents in several areas including art, writing and video production. She writes poetry and comedy sketches, and runs her own blog.
Angela is an active member in a variety of clubs including Students Against Destructive Decisions, the Gay-Straight Alliance and Yearbook Club. This year she was selected to represent Nassau BOCES at Lobby Day in Albany, where she spoke to state officials about the importance of BOCES programs and shared the impact that the CCA has had on her life. “Since the day I met Angela Eugenio, her passion for achieving her personal goals has been clear,” wrote award nominator, CCA School Psychologist Stacy Frank. “She is highly motivated and honest about her challenges, choosing to met them by dealing with them directly. Her passion has driven her to succeed and to not allow her past mistakes to decide her future.” Outstanding students have
been earning this prestigious award since 2007. It currently stands as a memorial to former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was only surpassed by his love and care for them. Memorial Parade Set The annual Farmingdale Village Memorial Day Parade is set for Monday, May 25th, at 10 a.m. The parade kicks off at Thomas Powell Blvd and Bethpage Road, proceeds south on Main Street, ending at Village Hall. After the parade there will be a ceremony to dedicate a monument for recent and future War Veterans. “We honor all Veterans today and every day for
their courage, sacrifices and dedication to fight for our freedom,” said Farmingdale Village Mayor Ralph Ekstrand. Join Village officials, the Farmingdale Fire Department, VFW, Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, other organizations, parade marchers and the community for the parade and ceremony. “Thank you to the

Historian Retires

William J. Johnston retires after serving 25 years as Farmingdale Village Historian. Originally from Pittsburgh, Bill and his wife Mildred had started a family and were looking for economic opportunity when they moved to Farmingdale Village in 1962. Bill began his teaching career in the Village school system and worked his way up to Principal and Administrator. Bill received many accolades during his career, including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Local Government Historian’s Professional Achievement Award. The award is named for Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President, who served with distinction as historian of the Town of Hyde Park, Dutchess County, from 1926 to 1932, including his years as Governor of New York State. Farmingdale Village
Mayor Ralph Ekstrand said, “Farmingdale is very fortunate to have had Bill Johnston as our Village Historian for over a quarter of century. His passion for history and unselfish sharing of his knowledge has been an immeasurable contribution to the Farmingdale Community! He collaborated to create events that everyone looks forward to: The Minute of History at our Summer Concert series, the annual holiday tree lighting celebration, as well as leading numerous Village History Walks where literally thousands of people have learned more about their local community from one of the finest gentlemen that I have the privilege to know. The Village thanks Bill for his vast contributions spanning 25 years as Village Historian”. The FarmingdaleBethpage Historical Society and the Farmingdale
Public Library have extensive historical information about the history of Farmingdale. While some things change, some remain the same. Bill & his wife live in the same house in the Village today which they purchased back in 1962. They enjoy the walkability of the Village and that they don’t really need to leave the Village, unless perhaps to buy major furnishings. From the Bethpage Purchase, pre-war period to suburbanization, to current day, Farmingdale continues to evolve and grow as revitalization continues. “This is an exciting time for the Village of Farmingdale; we look back at history and are proud of the transformation into a diverse community with economic activity, transitoriented development great adaptive re-use for the entire community,” said Mayor Ralph Ekstrand.

My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.
