Senior Summer Activities

I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and ﬂag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

Internship Opportunities Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced a new opportunity for college students to gain meaningful work experience through a new internship program being offered by the Town for the 2018 summer season. Woodward Parkway Elementary School teacher Christine Breuer wanted a book about compassion that would bring her class of second, third, and fourthgraders together. She found it in Save Me A Seat, a novel by Sara Weeks and Gita Varadarajan. Told in the alternating, first-person

narrative of two fifth grade boys - one American, one Indian - it addresses themes of loneliness, bullying, friendship, and cultural differences. The novel was especially meaningful for fourth-grader, Soham Sharma, whose family emigrated from India. When Soham read the book with his

mother, she was so moved by the story that she decided to treat the class to a feast of the South Indian food mentioned in the book. Soham became an ambassador of sorts, explaining the different types of food to his classmates. “The food really brought the kids together,” said Mrs. Breuer, “they all went home and told their parents they wanted Indian food. Parents even asked for recipes.” Student Bella Arena described the food as “being in Indian heaven!” To complement the book, Breuer brought her students into the Innovation Lab to create “artifacts” from the list of topics in the book’s glossary. They wrote equations in Vedic Math, dressed a doll in a traditional saree, and created a Tiffen Box - a unique type of lunch box used throughout India and South Asia. “I get to explore side by side with them, so I learned a lot too,” said Mrs. Breuer. “It used to be that teachers had to be three steps ahead of students, but with technology I can answer their questions in the moment.” The book and the activities that students engaged in really helped them learn about empathy and the acceptance of other people’s cultures.

The Farmingdale Robotics Team returned from the 2018 VEX Robotics Worlds competition in Kentucky, coming in 280 out of 11,217 teams in the world and finishing in the top half of their division. “What an amazing effort and commitment by this group!” said Farmingdale High School Principal,

Samuel Thompson. Assistant Principal Jed Herman, who accompanied the students, parents, and faculty to the competition said, “It was nice to see our kids compete at such a high level against a worldwide field. The Farmingdale students that went to VEX also gave back; volunteering

their time and acting as a liaison and translator for people across the globe. They demonstrated to the world what it means to be a Daler.” The first VEX Worlds was held in 2008. This was the 11th world competition and the fourth consecutive year that Farmingdale earned a place to compete.

Last Chance to Pay Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2017-2018 School taxes by the May 10th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2% late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after May 31st cannot be accepted since the

collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay late taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property.” In July, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to

all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 5712090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit that office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that property taxpayers in Oyster Bay do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school

drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. Elementary School students. At the head of her class sat NYPD Officer, Robert McNicholl - Albany

Avenue Elementary School alum and Farmingdale High School Class of 2006 - ready to be sketched and interviewed. He was one of fifteen law enforcement officers who volunteered their time to sit for a portrait session in Mrs. Weisfelner’s K-5 classes. This was the second year for Mrs. Weisfelner’s Portraits of Courage project. Last year she invited local veterans and decided this year to recruit law enforcement officers. The “models” were a mix of retired and active officers - male and female - from Nassau County, the NYPD, Auxiliary, and SWAT. Her idea for the lesson came from a radio interview she heard in 2017 with former President George Bush, talking about his book, Portraits of Courage:

A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America. In addition to learning the technical aspects of portrait drawing and painting, students practiced listening and public speaking skills. Each student took a turn asking questions while the class sketched and painted their subject. Mrs. Weisfelner said, “They reﬂected on how their personal image of those in law enforcement may have differed with the reality of what the job entails.” Overall, students were given the opportunity to meet inspiring men and women from their neighborhood and gained an understanding of why these people are truly Portraits of Courage.

New “Student” Diabetic Alert Dog who will be the companion of Emma Brussell, an elementary student with Type 1 diabetes. The one-year-old canine was introduced to the entire fourth grade during an assembly in the school auditorium last week. Diabetic Alert Dogs of America Trainer, Ahmed Hassan - who brought the dog from Las Vegas - explained that Rufus was essentially a “medical device” and that the children needed to be mindful of leaving Rufus alone so he could do his job. His nose has been trained to detect a bitter odor whenever Emma’s glucose levels are low - at which time he will alert her. He fits right in with our Woodward Family,” said Mrs. DeHayes. Mr. Hassan was delighted by all the preparations the school made to receive Rufus. “The questions the children asked were the best I’ve ever gotten at any school,” he said. He returns home knowing that Rufus

will have a good home, a good life, and an essential role in Emma’s well-being. Emma’s mother Kelly was on hand for the assembly and is excited to welcome Rufus into her family. “We are so proud of Emma. Her hard work and determination showed her that dreams do come true. Rufus is already proving to be a valuable part of managing and monitoring Emma’s blood sugar.” “The children in our class are behaving respectfully and know the boundaries that are involved in having a service dog in our classroom,” said Emma’s teacher Wendy Leff. They’re so supportive of Emma and it’s amazing to witness them watching Rufus assisting Emma. Animals have always touched my life and I feel

very privileged that I have Emma in my class as a student, and now to have her dog join us as well!” Emma, who loves to paint, began selling her paintings earlier this year to raise the $15,000 needed to train and adopt Rufus. After selling a few works of art, an anonymous donor gave her the bulk of the money she needed to adopt him into her family. “Emma is a brave and empowered young artist who created and sold her own pieces to help finance her own service dog,” said Woodward Parkway Elementary Principal Patrick Klocek. “We could not be prouder of her and we are grateful to our students and our entire school family for welcome Rufus with open arms!”
