On Wednesday evening, May 1, 2019, Superintendent Paul Defendini and the Farmingdale Board of Education hosted a ceremony in the middle school to celebrate the many students who shaved their heads or cut their hair in support of St. Baldrick’s Day. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to help find cures for children with cancer.
Each student was given a certificate, proudly recognizing them for their participation. Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -- but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit? “Your hands are the main transmitters of health careacquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered
nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -- opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can go a long way toward
ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of
germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the
opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.” Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread
of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.

They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.

Paul Defendini is the recently appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Farmingdale School District. He received his undergraduate, Master’s degree and Administrative degrees from Hofstra University. Paul previously worked as a teacher and Dean of Students at Howitt Middle School. In 2007, he was appointed School Business Administrator, and in 2010 was named the Assistant Superintendent for Business. In 2016— under his direction— Farmingdale passed the Bond referendum for the sports complex and aquatic center at Howitt Middle School. He was appointed superintendent in 2018. Paul serves as the president of the Nassau Association of School Business Officials and received the Jenkins Award from the Farmingdale Council of PTAs. He is an assistant PAL lacrosse coach, a Cub Scout leader, and works with the PB&J gang at St. Kilian Church. His two children currently attend Northside Elementary School. Carol Kellermann has worked with many charitable organizations,

Gorilla Conservation Project Farmingdale High School French language students are touring the district’s elementary schools to spread awareness about a gorilla conservation project, which is being helped by the collection of small electronics. The project was initiated by French teacher and frequent Walt Disney World visitor, Jill Nimphius. “Disney is very p h i l a n t h r o p i c and committed to environmental awareness, saving wildlife, and preserving the planet,” said Ms. Nimphius. “I explained to them that I teach high school French and I wanted to do a conservation project. That led me to Rachel Deneault, a Primate Carnivore Zoological Manager at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. coltan that is widely used in cell phones and other electronics is sourced from mines in the French Congo, the only place where Grauer’s gorillas live. Recycling cell phones and small electronics reduces the need to mine inside the gorilla’s habitat.” Each spring, in honor of Earth Day, FHS French students (with help from the Wildlife Warriors Club at Howitt Middle School) have held a small electronics recycling drive, collecting old cell phones, iPods, iPads, tablets, and MP3 players, which are then sent to ECO-CELL, a leading electronics recycler. The French 5 collegelevel course at FHS is designed to promote proficiency in French and to enable students to explore culture in contemporary and historical contexts. It encourages cultural awareness as students develop an understanding and appreciation of various aspects of the cultures of the French-speaking world. Sonya Kahlenberg, Executive Director at the GRACE Center recently reached out to commend
the students for their work, saying “Our partners at Disney recently shared the wonderful news with me that you and your students have been recycling electronics and raising money to support GRACE. Thank you! It means so
much to our team to have your support, and we love it when young people get involved. They are the conservation leaders of tomorrow, after all, so it is terrific that you have taken the initiative to get them engaged in this way.
ECO-CELL is a partner of ours and is doing very important work in helping to keep electronic waste out of landfills, and reduce the threat on the gorilla habitat in the Democratic Republic of Congo where we work. The effort of your
