Fifth-grade students at Eastplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District are currently researching endangered species as part of an enrichment unit. When students discovered that animal habitats are often destroyed, which is one cause of a species becoming endangered, they decided to do something positive for the environment. Guided by enrichment specialist Mrs. Conaghan, student council members created a new recycling program:

the TerraCycle Drink Pouch Brigade. Under this program, students have been collecting empty foil drink pouches, which are very difficult to recycle and usually end up as garbage in landfills. TerraCycle cleans the drink pouches and turns them into new and useful consumer products such as totes, backpacks and lunch bags. This means the usually discarded packages are not going into landfills; better still, the new “upcycled” products use much less

energy to make than items made from raw materials. Although the recycling project is still underway, TerraCycle has already accomplished its goal of collecting 1,001 empty juice pouches. For every pouch recycled, TerraCycle will also send funds to the National Wildlife Federation to protect 36 square feet of wildlife land critical to the safety of bison, grizzly bears, gray wolves and other wildlife.

Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto reminds residents that seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 11th, so that Town residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends. “So many residents enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Pinto said. “Town residents, who purchase a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening weekend.” The Councilman announced that beach stickers will be for sale daily, beginning on May

11th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration. In addition, residents must come in the vehicle they will be driving to the beaches as stickers are affixed to vehicles at the time of purchase. “Fun-filled days at Town of Oyster Bay beaches are not far off and the Town’s beach sticker is a great value,” added Councilman Pinto. “It may be used at all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents will have an opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the summer.” Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and

Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only on Saturday, May 25th. All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 22nd. Once an expansive gold coast estate, the course was designed around the natural contours of the land, including open meadows, dense forested areas and natural water bodies. “While Supervisor, Joseph Colby’s vision was to protect and preserve this impressive expanse of beautiful property,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Just as Colby envisioned, this golf course was a perfect example of both aesthetics and function.” Formerly known as the Bruce Estate, the 120 acre parcel of pristine land, now serving as the Town’s golf course, was acquired by the Town in the 1970’s. Although there were many proposed uses for the property, it was Supervisor Colby who thought that a golf course may best showcase and preserve the land. Even the manor on the estate

was kept intact because of its unique and historically significant architecture. The building has since been beautifully refurbished, while still maintaining its architectural character, and serves as the course’s club house, pro-shop, restaurant and catering hall. “Joe Colby’s leadership role with respect to advancing the concept of a golf course on the Bruce Estate cannot be understated,” Supervisor Venditto said. “His stewardship was a key component to making it a reality. Now, thanks to his vision, the golf course bearing his name truly

In a continuing effort to provide the Farmingdale community with in-depth information regarding the proposed 2013-2014 budget, the Farmingdale School District hosted a fourth budget workshop on April 17th. During this meeting, the District provided the community with an analysis of its budgeted revenue and expenditure projections. In addition, the community was provided with a review of proposed capital improvement projects and energyrelated projects associated with the District’s energy performance contract. The proposed tax levy increase

of 2.35% stays within the tax levy limit. “It is always important to maintain an open forum with the community and emphasize the importance of balancing a fiscally responsible budget and maintaining the programs that are vital to our students,” said Paul Defendini, Assistant Superintendent for Business. Governor Cuomo’s recent proposal calls for a reduction of $1.4 million in high-tax aid to the Farmingdale School District and a $37 million reduction in total high tax aid to all Long Island school districts. Among the topics discussed with Assemblyman Montesano and other legislators was the use of the Employee Benefits Accrued Liability Reserve fund. The committee suggested that school districts be permitted to use these reserves as a way to offset state aid reductions. Another concern raised by committee members was the potential impact that charter schools have on public school funding. The committee asked that the funding of public schools never be compromised or affected unfavorably because of funding for charter schools. Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the

BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse

than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

This summer, Long Island’s #1 arts school – Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) – invites students to learn from the masters. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 next fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills in a variety of disciplines. Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex that boasts professional dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fullyequipped professional theatre. Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Students can also choose from master classes in clowning and stage combat.
